Stewie2K: We had a lot of clashes in the roster
The former IGL of Team Liquid confirms that there have been a lot of problems on the team.
Jacky "Stewie2K" Yip and Team Liquid are in Copenhagen these days to take part of BLAST Premier Fall Finals. A tournament where fans of Team Liquid should not expect too much from the NA team according to Stewie2K, who we caught up with on the Media Day of the event.
- For the fans, I want them to know that we have almost zero to no expectations at this event and that’s why we haven’t played together going into the tournament. Changes are going to happen soon, so there’s really no need to continue practising. We are going to use what we have used all year long.
The former IGL of Team Liquid hereby confirms the statement made by his teammate Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski earlier today about the upcoming roster changes.
- It’s no secret that there has been a lot of internal problems within the roster, which also is why we are making roster changes. For me, it’s all about personalities and making sure we are able to have conversations and work things out, and we weren’t able to do that. The best way I can explain it is, that there are so many stars on this team, and I’m a person who watches basketball, so I compare us with the Lakers. You put a team together which have so many stars and they are supposed to succeed on paper. But look at the Lakers now, they are not really succeeding and performing in the way they should. That’s the same for us.
On Team Liquid, Jacky "Stewie2K" Yip has played a key part of the ultra-successful run, that the team had in 2019, where they won six major tournaments included the Intel Grand Slam. Since then the fortune has changed for the North American team, who has not had a good year with the early exit from the Major as the best indicator of that. The lack of improvement throughout the year has taken its toll on the five-man roster.
- We had a lot of clashes in the roster. We always ran back to the same issues throughout the whole year, and it’s always the same conversations and nothing is really improving. It was something we had to work on within our game and we weren’t able to go over the hurdle. It created a lot of tension.
BLAST Premier Fall Finals and IEM Winther will serve as the last dance for the current iteration of Team Liquid. Tomorrow they play the first match of BLAST Premier Fall Finals, when they face Team Vitality at 12.00 (CET).
