Gambit shuts down G2 and advance to upper finals
The Russian roster displayed big strength after losing their own map pick to defeat G2.
If there were any doubters left about the Gambit roster, they surely will have to give in now. The world's number 1 continued their incredible 2021 with a solid win against G2.
On their opponent's map pick, Gambit tore G2 apart in the first half. Sergey 'Ax1Le' Rykhtorov made it happen for the Russians. He went 7-2 in duels with G2's star player Nikola 'NiKo' Kovač, which was enough for the Russians to take map control round after round. A 16-8 win on Mirage gave Gambit all the confidence boost, that they could ask for before continuing the match on Train.
But then G2 stepped up. An even first half got replaced by an impressive start to their T-side on Train. In-game leader Nemanja 'nexa' Isaković showed the way going 24-18 in K-D leading his team to a 16-13 win on the rails.
Dust2 is usually in the map pool when G2 plays. Despite only having a 50% win rate, NiKo and company often either picks the map or leave it as the decider. Today was no different.
In the beginning, it looked promising for the French/Balkan squad. They quickly made it 3-0, but then disaster struck. Gambit won 11 rounds in a row in a dominant fashion. Dmitry 'sh1ro' Sokolov opened the second half with a 1vs3 clutch to destroy any hope of a comeback.
Gambit advance to the Upper Final in Group A, where they will face either NAVI or Virtus.pro. G2 drops down to the lower bracket.
