Kjaerbye: The superstar that never prospered
He was one of the most promising prospects in CS:GO - now he is retired at age 23
Over the course of years, there have been many incredible prospects to have appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. However, it isn't always a fairy tale ending for these young talented players. Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye was one of the biggest talents within the Danish scene and played under the best Danish team at that current moment of time in Astralis. It was clear that he was something special and many thought of him as the next big thing within the Danish CS:GO scene. This, however, was never the case.
In 2018 "Kjaerbye" left Astralis to join a new Danish organization called North. The organization had expressed a great belief in the e-sports scene and they were not shy of promises as to what they would bring to the table as an organization. This, of course, enticed many Danish players, one of them being "kjaerbye". He left Astralis in 2018 to join North.
Things weren't as they had been promised at North, at least not the results the Danish team provided at events. And what was even worse for the young "kjaerbye" was the success that Astralis picked up after he left them to join North. With Emil "Magisk" Reif as his replacement things took off at the Astralis camp and they went on to be the most dominating force the game of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has ever seen.
Things proceeded to go downhill at the North camp and it was clear that "kjaerbye" had made one of the unluckiest transfers in the history of CS:GO. Failing to reach the level that the organization had planned for it was a difficult defeat when they put their CS:GO division on hold on Friday the 5th of February 2021.
North wasn't the only ones to pull the plug. "kjaerbye" who was sold a dream only to leave what would become the dream team of CS:GO in Astralis, stopped his career earlier this year. At the young age of only 23 years old the CS:GO community would have to say goodbye to the prospect that never prospered. Whilst he has announced his retirement, his young age could mean a new team for him in the future if he is ready to give it another shot. For now, let's look at some of the best moments produced by unlucky "kjaerbye":
