fnatic defeat Cloud9 2-1
fnatic beat Cloud9 in a close BO3-series and advance to the semi-finals
In a battle for a spot in the semi-final of cs_summit 7, we saw Cloud9 go head to head against the legendary Swedes of fnatic. Cloud9 currently ranks 19th. in the world, whereas fnatic finds themselves at 16th. in the world. In the end, it was also fnatic to prove themselves to be the stronger roster. They managed to defeat Cloud9 2-1 and thereby advance to the semi-finals of the $200.000 event.
The BO3-series started on Vertigo, after surprisingly being picked by fnatic. The Swedes had, prior to this match, only played the map six times in the past three months, averaging a 50% win-rate. With an unconventional map pick and a Cloud9 roster ready to cause havoc it proved difficult for the fnatic side and ultimately, they would have to see themselves bested, as Cloud9 closed out map one with a 16-6 victory on Vertigo.
The second map, despite being picked by Cloud9, seemed a more leveled playing field. Both teams refused to give their opponents an inch, which was reflected in the scoreline as the two rosters went to halftime at 8-7 favoring Cloud9. The second half of Inferno, however, had fnatic's name written all over it. In the end, the Swedes managed to close out Inferno with a 16-10 victory and thereby force a third and final battle.
The final and deciding map was set to take place on Overpass, a map that both teams have a win-rate of 50% on, in the past three months of playing it. With both teams waking up on Inferno, the deciding map of Overpass seemed destined to be a close affair. Despite it being a close battle with both teams proving their capabilities, fnatic ultimately proved to be the better roster on that day. With a 16-9 victory they closed Overpass and thereby also the series and secured themselves a spot in the semi-finals.
