Not only did Team Vitality lift the coveted trophy, but ZywOo also added another accolade to his name by being recognized as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the event. The French esports sensation shared his thoughts on the intense final, the pressure leading up to it, and what this win means for him and his team.

Reflecting on the final, ZywOo expressed a mix of relief and happiness as the pressure of the competition finally subsided. "It's tough to say something because the pressure is going down. We're just happy; everyone has smiled now, and it's been amazing," he said. The finals at IEM Cologne presented an extraordinary challenge, one that ZywOo admitted was unlike any other he had experienced before. "I never played this kind of final, and finally, we won it. It’s amazing," he added.

Despite the victory, ZywOo acknowledged that there is still room for improvement. When asked if he was satisfied with their performance, he candidly admitted, "I think we played a good game, but it could be way better. It was the final, so a lot more pressure to perform, and sometimes we didn't play our own game." However, the focus remains on learning and growing from their mistakes. "We're obviously going to watch the game and talk about the mistakes we made, but we won, and we're just happy with the result," he said.

This win marks Team Vitality's first trophy of 2024, a significant achievement after coming up short in two previous finals. The victory was particularly sweet, especially given the high expectations and the pressure to deliver this year. "Our goal this year was to lift at least one trophy, and we did it, so we're going to be happy and just enjoy it now," ZywOo noted with satisfaction.

The triumph in Cologne carried extra weight for Vitality's captain, Dan "apEX" Madesclaire, who had previously expressed a strong desire to win this tournament before considering retirement. ZywOo acknowledged the importance of this win for apEX, saying, "Of course, we're happy for him because, like he said in his interview, he wanted to win Cologne before retiring. Everyone was really focused and worked really hard to make this happen for him."

One of the most intense moments in the final was when Vitality struggled to close out the match on Inferno, despite having a massive lead. ZywOo attributed the delay to a mix of overconfidence and caution. "Maybe we took it too easy because we were leading 11-2 and thought we had already won. But some people talked during the game to say, 'Just take your time,' and we finished in a good way," he shared.

With 20 MVP medals to his name, ZywOo is now just one medal away from tying Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev's record. However, he remains humble about the possibility of surpassing the legendary player. "If I get another MVP, I’ll be at the same level, but to be honest, I’m not always thinking about it. While I play, I’m just doing my thing with my team," he said.

With the season in full swing, including upcoming tournaments like the BLAST Finals, IEM Rio, and the Major, ZywOo believes this victory will be a significant boost for the team. "It’s going to be a good boost because we really needed it after the two losses in Dallas. We have so much to bring to the table, and we know we can do better things. This will give us good momentum for the rest of the year," he concluded.

Vitality and Natus Vincere made it through the group stage with three straight wins to put them directly into the Semi-Finals on Saturday in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. However, when looking at the top performers of the tournament so far, G2 sticks out despite their opening loss against SAW. In the lower bracket, G2 completely annihilated their opponents to secure a Quarter-Final spot in Cologne. Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa is one of the two new members on the roster, and looking at the stats for the tournament so far, it looks like a very good move by the management of G2.

Seven of the top 10 teams in the world have secured spots in the playoff bracket of the PGL Copenhagen Major, marking a level of competition not seen in a Major for five years. This stacked lineup naturally complicates predictions for the final stage. Let's delve into the matchups:

During the Elimination Stage, Vitality faced challenges due to Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut falling ill, requiring other players to step up. However, with ZywOo hopefully recovered, Vitality faces Cloud9. This encounter has occurred three times in recent months, with Vitality leading 2-1. Relief was evident on the faces of Team Vitality's players as they secured a playoff berth at the Copenhagen Major. The reigning champions have displayed vulnerabilities at the Major, particularly with their star player Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut grappling with illness during the event.

- It’s a bit of a disaster right now the way we play. As you know, the best player in the world is not feeling well, and even though we have a strong team it is tough to not have him (on 100%). But I am really happy that we made it work, and then he is able to be there for the playoffs. It was really rough, we didn’t play good, we played one by one and it was pretty chaotic, said Dan "apEX" Madesclaire in an interview on the official broadcast after the match.

 With five or six days before Team Vitality is back in action in the Quarter-Finals of the Copenhagen Major, there should be time for Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut to recover. A must if Vitality is going to make it to the next stage according to Dan "apEX" Madesclaire.

I just hope that ZywOo will get better, because we need him. It’s a major, if your best player is not there, then it is really difficult. I’m just happy that we are in the quarter-finals, fuck the way that we did it, the charismatic Frenchman said after the game.

Team Vitality has for many years been synonymous with Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut. The best French player in history, and one of the all-time greats in competitive Counter-Strike has been playing on Vitality since the organization entered CS:GO in October 2018. Today the French organization announced an extension of the long-term partnership.

Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut’s contract was set to expire at the end of 2024, but the star player will now remain at the organization until the end of 2026. ZywOo has been one of the most prolific players of the CS:GO era, where he has battled with Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyljev throughout the last years about being the best player in the world. Each player has won the award three times.

Vitality and ZywOo won the BLAST.tv Paris Major in 2023, while also the BLAST Fall Final and the BLAST World Final at the tail-end of 2023. In 2024 the Frenchmen has dropped down to #3 on the World Ranking, but remains one of the favorites for the title at the upcoming Major in Copenhagen.

It was an action-packed day 1 at the PGL Copenhagen Major European RMR Group B, where the defending champions from Team Vitality destroyed all opposition to go 2-0 up in the Swiss Group Phase. The talk of the town was the insane performances from Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut, who went 25-6, and 24-4 during the 31 rounds it took Vitality to win 13-2, and 13-3 against GamerLegion and Heroic.

Danil "donk" Kryshkovets and the rest of Team Spirit had strolled through ENCE in the opening match, but against Astralis the IEM Katowice champions had to deal with adversity for the first time in a while.

Astralis gave a great performance using some of their trademarks as tools to tame the Siberian beast in Danil "donk" Kryshkovets. A superb use of utility and a several good teamplays set Astralis up for success against Spirit, who had to reset a couple of times using their timeouts before figuring out a way past Astralis. In the end it was a 1vs3 clutch from Dmitriy "sh1ro" Sokolov that tipped the match in favor of Team Spirit, who won Vertigo 13-11 and joins Vitality in the 2-0 bracket. Cloud9, and MOUZ also won both of their matches on day 1.

Preasy, Guild Eagles, Nexus, and PERA are all in danger of elimination tomorrow after two defeats on Day 1.

Will Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut be named the best player of the year once again in 2024? The Frenchman won the award last year without any real competition. But this year might be different. Both Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov and Danil "donk" Kryshkovets have started the year on such a high note, that it actually seems possible, that ZywOo’s status as the best player in the world could be challenged.

On top of the ratings sits Danil "donk" Kryshkovets. The 17-year-old Team Spirit player is flying high and have only lost one match with his team so far in 2024. An insane 1.61 rating on 12 maps against top 50 teams in the world is a staggering level to start the year on for the young prodigy, who has already been compared with the rise of Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut.

Another Russian player, who has been unstoppable in 2024 is Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov. The G2 AWP’er is rated at 1.45 for 14 maps. He has the biggest positive difference for Kill-Deaths with +117 so far. The 18-year-old star player was highlighted by his teammate Nikola “NiKo” Kovač as a potential number 1 in the world, and has certainly done everything in his power to prove him right.

Despite a shaky start to 2024 for Team Vitality with six maps lost out of 14 played, Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut is still not far away from his two Russian counterparts. With an incredible 1.42 rating, ZywOo has started the year in a similar fashion as 2023. We have seen the longevity and consistency of the performances of the Frenchman, so the big question is if donk and m0NESY can follow suit.

Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut is undeniably the best Counter-Strike player in the world right now. Often called “The Chosen One” due to the mind-blowing fact, that the Frenchman is born on the exact release date of the game that would come to define his life. The now 23-year-old Team Vitality player was recently celebrated as the best player of 2023 after another year with insane performances topped by a Major MVP run at the BLAST.tv Major on home soil in Paris.

Before the start of the 2024 season at the BLAST Premier Spring Groups in Copenhagen, Pley.gg interviewed the talented Frenchman on what he had learned in 2023, and how he dealt with the mental side of Counter-Strike and the pressure that goes alongside being the best player in the world.

Where is ZywOo’s ego? The question has been raised multiple times by analysts, who want the French superstar to show his emotions and demand more from his teammates to further elevate his game. The answer to the question was given by ZywOo himself in an interview with [link:{"url":"https://www.hltv.org/news/37605/zywoo-i-started-to-have-a-bit-of-an-ego-to-show-people-what-im-capable-of","isNewTab":true,"text":"HLTV"}] last year. The ego came out after Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut had gotten off to a subpar start to CS2, and he wanted to show everyone that he could also perform in the new iteration of Counter-Strike.

- A lot of people were texting some bad things on Twitter. I wasn’t really following it, but I knew inside I wanted to show, that I don’t care if they change up the game, for me it’s going to be the same. I am not going to change my mindset or gamestyle. I just want to show, that even if it is another game, I can still play at my best, ZywOo explains and points at his competitive nature as a contributing factor to his success.

- If I would not play CS, I would compete in something else, because I love to compete.

Perhaps the reason why we have never seen the true ego of ZywOo is, that he has never had any issues living up to the expectations that he has set for himself with his performances in-game. The so-called rivalry between ZywOo and s1mple has never really been a motivating factor for the young Frenchman.

- My mom educated me like this. She never told me to have an ego or to act like a bad guy whenever I win. She taught me to think about yourself and not about someone else.

Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut lived with his mother, brother, and grandmother from the age of 10, after the divorce of his parents. The French CS star opened up about his upbringing in the mini docuseries by GUCCI last year.

The sort of easy-going mentality that surrounds ZywOo when you speak with him is the same attitude that has helped him stay true to his nature despite the increased pressure the Frenchman has experienced during the past years when he has broken through on the CS scene.

- I’m living my life day by day, and not thinking about the future. I think it has helped me to perform and also not to feel the pressure of being number 1.

- The most important thing I learned was in the Major. We didn’t play against the strongest teams in the world in the playoffs, but we still played good. It has been a problem before that we were struggling against underdogs or lower-ranked teams. Before the Major, we were really focused on that, and we learned from our mistakes. At the Major we learned how to play against underdogs, ZywOo says.

The BLAST tournaments have in history been good to ZywOo and Vitality. Besides the BLAST.tv Paris Major win last year, Vitality also took home the World Final and the Fall Final in Copenhagen. In 2020 they also won the Fall Finals. But two trophies that are not in the trophy cabinet of Vitality and ZywOo are Katowice and Cologne. Two tournaments that the 23-year-old has set his sights on for the coming season.

- I keep going. I want to stay at the top and keep winning tournaments. I obviously want to win one more Major, but also Katowice and Cologne, because I have never won one of them, ZywOo states.

For the third time in history, Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut can call himself the best Counter-Strike player on the planet. To no surprise for anyone, ZywOo took down the award after a superb 2023, where he and Team Vitality won the Blast.tv Paris Major alongside IEM Rio, Gamers8, BLAST Fall Final, and BLAST World Final. 2023 was the year where CS:GO was replaced by CS2 during the year, that otherwise were dominated by teams such as Team Vitality, FaZe, and G2.

Player-wise the story of the year was the decline of Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyljev, who ended the year by taking a pause from the game after the release of CS2. Despite a drop in performance from the Ukrainian, s1mple is still ranked in the top 10 players of the year. A testament to the insane levels that the NAVI players have shown in the past years.

Another revelation of 2023 was the emergence of the 16-year-old Danil "donk" Kryshkovets. In the summer of 2023, donk was promoted to the first team of Team Spirit, and has since been dominating CS2. 2024 looks promising for the Russian roster, who got Dmitriy "sh1ro" Sokolov onboard at the end of the year. With two players in the top 3 of the best-performing players of 2023, Team Spirit will have high hopes for the new year.

The Frenchman proved every single critic wrong with an incredible month of November. Or should we say a phenomenal BLAST Premier Fall Finals? All 10 maps of ZywOo’s were played during the tournament in Copenhagen. Against Heroic, Complexity, Cloud9, and FaZe the French prodigy delivered a 1.35 rating on average, which was also enough to secure him the MVP award for the tournament and Vitality the tournament win.

The best thing about the performance was the dominance from ZywOo with the AWP. Many of the best snipers of today have had trouble adjusting to the new game, but in the Royal Arena, ZywOo looked like a guy, who has played the game for several years. 

 made 34% of his kills with the “Big Green”, which is actually a tad higher than his average in 2023 in CS:GO.

Donk is insane! The young Team Spirit rifler has just continued his upwards trajectory from October when he won our Pleyer of the Month award. 

 has averaged an insane 1.42 rating on 16 maps against SAW, Monte, Space, Apeks, 9INE, and MIBR. The opponents are not on the same level as ZywOo’s, and donk’s performances didn’t win Spirit any titles, but they are still impressive nonetheless.

. The American has been the driving force in the return of North American Counter-Strike. Complexity is simply performing on a whole other level with the experienced rifler onboard. With a rating of 1.29 against opponents such as Vitality, NAVI, FaZe, MOUZ, FURIA, and Astralis, it is safe to say, that EliGE is back at a level, that we enjoy to see.

The reigning Major champions from Team Vitality became the first team to deny FaZe a Grand Final win in CS2 with a stellar 2-0 win at the BLAST Fall Finals in Copenhagen. The win also ended FaZe’s incredible win streak of 18 matches.

A packed Royal Arena witnessed Team Vitality throw a curveball by picking Vertigo as the opening map of the series. Here Shahar 'flameZ' Shushan stole the show with a 23-7 K-D scoreline, while the Canadian star rifler Russel 'Twistzz' Van Dulken had an off-day only contributing with one kill during the 16 rounds it took Vitality to win 13-3.

The ending of the map was especially harsh for FaZe, who only managed to make two kills in total in the four rounds the second half lasted on their T side.
