NIP, MongolZ, and Complexity flawless on Day 1 of YaLLa Compass 2024
Several upsets saw one of the tournament favorites, Eternal Fire go 0-2 in Abu Dhabi.
There was action from the get-go at the $400,000 YaLLa Compass 2024 tournament, where 12 teams are fighting for the hefty $200,000 1st place prize.
14 matches were played on Day 1 of the tournament, where Ninjas in Pyjamas, The MongolZ, and Complexity managed to win both of their respective matches.
For Ninjas in Pyjamas the first day of action was especially uplifting. The Swedes are playing their first LAN tournament with their new lineup. Artem "r1nkle" Moroz proved to be vital in securing the second win of the day in a close match against HEROIC. Here the Ukrainian AWPer delivered a spectacular match to seal a 13-10 win. NIP had earlier in the day defeated ENCE 13-6.
The biggest upset of the day came in the all-Danish derby between Astralis and Sashi. Here the two former Astralis players Philip 'Lucky' Ewald and Mikkel 'MistR' Thomsen proved their worth with an excellent game on Nuke, where the CT-side of Sashi gave Astralis problems throughout the first half. A 13-8 win for Sashi was however not enough to end the day on a high note, as the Danes lost their two other matches of the day.
The biggest disappointment of the day was Eternal Fire. The Turkish roster came into the tournament with a fresh win at the CCT Global Finals 2024, but could not follow suit at YaLLa Compass 2024. Two losses against Complexity (13-16) and Fnatic (5-13) leave Eternal Fire with a mountain to climb on Day 2 of the tournament, which starts at 10.00 (CET).
