Whether you are hardstuck Iron or grinding through Ascendant, your mechanical skill in VALORANT boils down to a few core concepts. You don’t need raw, unteachable talent to hit Radiant; you just need to understand and practice the right mechanics.
This updated 2026 guide breaks down the Four Pillars of VALORANT Aim: Precise Flicking, Crosshair Placement, Deadzoning (Stopping), and Aiming While Mobile. Here is how you can train each pillar to start top-fragging your lobbies.
Pillar 1: Precise Flicking & Micro-Adjustments
Flicking is not just about moving your mouse as fast as humanly possible; it is a two-part process.
- The Initial Flick: Rapidly moving your crosshair from its resting point to the general vicinity of the target.
- The Micro-Adjustment: The fraction of a second where you stabilize your crosshair directly onto the enemy’s head before clicking.
Most players miss because they skip the micro-adjustment entirely. To train this, go to the Range and stand near the practice bots. Shoot one bot in the head, smoothly flick to the next bot, stop, consciously make the micro-adjustment to their head, and fire. Keep your mouse movements as horizontal as possible. Once you master this, turn on Easy, Medium, and eventually Hard bots to introduce time constraints.
Pillar 2: Dynamic Crosshair Placement
Good crosshair placement reduces the amount of flicking you actually have to do. If your crosshair is already on the enemy’s head when they swing, you just have to click.
However, crosshair placement isn’t static. It requires constant adjustment as you navigate the map’s geometry.
- Pre-Aiming: Before peeking a corner, place your crosshair inside the wall where the enemy’s head will be. When you step out, your crosshair will naturally land on the target without you needing to move your mouse.
- Elevation Changes: Maps are not flat. If you are pushing onto A-Site Sunset, you must proactively aim higher to account for enemies standing on back-site boxes.
- Tracking: Practice running in circles around a single bot in the Range while keeping your crosshair locked perfectly on its head. This builds the stability needed to clear angles smoothly.
Pillar 3: Deadzoning (Stopping Before Shooting)
VALORANT requires you to be stationary to fire accurately, but standing still makes you an easy target. The secret is Deadzoning—the technique of shooting in the exact millisecond your character changes direction.
When you move left (A key) and then immediately move right (D key), your character’s velocity briefly hits zero during the transition. If you shoot a single bullet at that exact moment of zero velocity, it will be 100% accurate, even though you appear to be constantly moving.
The Pillar Drill: Go to the center wooden pillar in the Range. Track the pillar with your crosshair. Move left, press right to change direction, and shoot exactly at the turnaround point. Use the shooting error graph in your settings; if you see any blue bars, you shot while moving. You only want to see orange bars.
Pillar 4: Aiming While Mobile
What happens when you are caught completely off guard? Many players panic, instantly stop moving, and try to flick to the enemy. This makes you a sitting duck.
Instead, you must learn to adjust your aim while staying mobile. When surprised, continue your movement (strafing) to make yourself a hard target. While you are strafing, use that time to smoothly track your crosshair onto the enemy. Only commit to stopping and shooting once your crosshair is already on their head. Deathmatch is the best place to practice this, as you will constantly be swung from unexpected angles.
Bonus: Advanced Gun Mechanics
Once you master the four pillars, you can refine your weapon-specific mechanics:
- Spray Control: Riot adjusted recoil patterns in 2026, making the first ~10 bullets slightly easier to control. Practice pulling down and controlling the horizontal sway on a wall in the Range from 20 meters away.
- Spray Transfers: Smoothly dragging a continuous spray from one dead target to a new target without letting go of the trigger.
- Run and Gun: While rifles require strict deadzoning, SMGs (Spectre/Stinger) and certain pistols (Classic right-click/Frenzy) are incredibly effective while running at close range. Don’t be afraid to hold W with a Spectre!
