Big changes had happened before the start of ESL One Cologne 2014. The map pool of the tournament had seen a major overhaul with Train being removed, while Cache, Cobblestone, and Overpass were added. Overpass had only recently been introduced in the game, which gave way for some controversy before the start of the Major.

Once again Ninjas in Pyjamas was deemed one of the top favorites before the tournament. The Swedes had lost the Grand Final at a Major twice in a row, but with Christopher 'GeT_RiGhT' Alesund back in shape, the expectations were sky-high for the Swedes. Next in line was the previous champions from Virtus.pro, while Dignitas, Natus Vincere, Titan, and Fnatic were in the group of potential outsiders for the trophy.

From the get-go, it was two French teams who stole the spotlight. Team LDLC smashed Group B and qualified in first place for the playoffs. Epsilon repeated the feat in Group A upsetting tournament favorites from Ninjas in Pyjamas. The French roster (fxy0, GMX, kioShiMa, Sf, shox) destroyed NIP 16-6 on Cobblestone to claim first place in the group. This raised the question about NIP's candidacy for the CSGO throne. The Swedes made it through their group and were now paired with the high-flying Cloud9 in the first round of the playoffs.

Fnatic narrowly edged out Natus Vincere, while Epsilon was put to rest by Dignitas (aizy, device, dupreeh, FeTiSh, Xyp9x). The reigning champions Virtus.pro were upset by Team LDLC, while all eyes were set on the last Quarter-Final. In an intense and dramatic match, Ninjas in Pyjamas fought the North Americans in a ferocious battle that ended 2-1 in the favor of the Swedes. 

Fnatic qualified for the Grand Final with a clear 2-0 win against Dignitas. Would it be another all-Swedish final? NIP once again lost the first map, after Team LDLC won on Inferno. But again NIP fought back and forced the match onto Cobblestone, where NIP edged out their opponents 16-14.  

The two Swedish rivals, Fnatic and Ninjas in Pyjamas were ready for their second encounter in a Major Grand Final. This time NIP started off by winning Fnatic's map pick, but then went on to lose Cache. Inferno was set as the decider. Adam 'friberg' Friberg cemented his nickname "King of Banana" with an incredible ace to revive the Ninjas from a poor start. The support player was later named MVP of the tournament. NIP won the title by defeating Fnatic 16-13 and could raise the trophy for the first and so far only time. Notable was the fact, that none of the five NIP players ended the tournament as one of the top 10 best rated players, which also told the story about a tournament filled with ups and downs for the Swedish roster.

The Swedish rifler Adam “friberg” Friberg is a renowned figure in the Counter-Strike and is someone who undoubtedly will go down in history as a true legend of the game. The 29-year-old Dignitas player has won countless big tournaments, including the ESL One Cologne Major in 2014, and was also a member of NIP’s iconic roster that went on an 87-0 map winning streak.

However, his accolades and titles aren’t what friberg is most known for. In the latest article in our 

we'll uncover the story about how one particular street in CS:GO was named after friberg.

Because, the majority of people in the Counter-Strike world will most likely remember him as the “King of Banana - not due to him liking the yellow fruit, but because he’s the undisputed ruler of the famous alley on Inferno called “Banana”.

Through countless stellar plays on or near Banana, friberg quickly was crowned as the king of the iconic passage between mid and B on Inferno. Something, Valve decided to honour by giving the Swede his very own memorial in the game – A street sign placed at the top of Banana, saying “Via Adamo” (Adam Street on English).

Dignitas have decided to make all of their players available for transfer effective immediately. The organization states that the results have not been what they expected from the squad and that missing the Major was the last nail in the coffin.

The team are not dismissing the thought of keeping some of the players.

There have been many phenomenal Swedish CS:GO players throughout the years of Counter-Strike. One of the most iconic players within the professional scene is, without any doubt, Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg. The Swede made a name for himself back when Ninjas in Pyjamas took the CS:GO scene by storm and dominated every team that came their way. After having spent eight years at Ninjas in Pyjamas, the now 33-year-old rifler joined Dignitas where he has been playing alongside the likes of "Lekr0" and "friberg" for the past two years.

Despite being 33 years old, it has been announced that "f0rest" is not ready to hang up his mouse just yet. He has just extended his contract with the North American Dignitas organization and will, at least, be competing for yet another year of CS:GO. Alongside his contract extension, it has been confirmed that the experienced Adam "friberg" Friberg will play another year under the Dignitas banner. 

The Dignitas roster for the upcoming 2022 season looks as follows: 

If you ask the Counter-Strike community which nation has been the most dominant and paramount in the history of the game, the majority will most likely point towards one certain European country.

The Swedish CS:GO scene has produced a myriad of legendary figures in Patrik “f0rest” Lindberg, Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund, and many others. The big Scandinavian nation, embodied in Fnatic and Ninjas in Pyjamas, also dominated the very beginning of CS:GO, winning four out of the first six Major Championships.

However, every great dynasty has its end, and for the Swedish CS:GO scene, it was no different.

We have sat down with f0rest to hear what he believes caused the collapse of the great Swedish dynasty, and why the Swedish CS:GO scene isn’t as dominant anymore. When speaking with the former NIP superstar, one particular aspect seems to appear – The unwillingness to grind your way to the top.

- The Swedish players feel kind of entitled because Sweden always has been presented as one of the best nations in Counter-Strike. Because of that, some people expect to be a great star player right off the bat and to join an already tier-1 team. But people are not fighting together as a team to reach that goal collectively.

The quality and the grind that Danish players are doing, is what’s lacking in Sweden. The Swedish scene hasn’t really committed to the lower-tier teams in the way Denmark has, where teams have stuck together and made the grind to reach the top, f0rest explains and continues with his comparison between the two neighbouring countries:

- What Denmark does right, is that they nurture and have a lot of really strong teams in lower-tiers that grind their way up towards the higher ends. Heroic for instance, they came from battling in tier-2 to now being a stable Top 5 team in the world (…) At the end of the all, we just need to see more Swedish teams stick together longer and actually grind and try to make it work.

f0rest's way to the top of Counter-Strike

Long before becoming one of Counter-Strike’s most accoladed and greatest players in history, f0rest recalls a time and a period where he alongside some of his fellow friends were trying to break through to the professional scene.

- When I started playing Counter-Strike there was already a lot of Swedish pro teams, where I only played with four of my friends. We all had the same goal to reach LAN events or just do something. During that path, we all became really good, because we all wanted the same thing – to become great players and a great team.

We didn’t make it that far, however, we did a few upsets as a team, and that was enough to get recognized and picked up by a better team. You got to grind – I think that’s the way to do it because it’s not up to others to show you the way.

I don’t think it’s as hard to get recognized now, as it were be back in the day. There are a lot of tournaments you can play right now. So just get in there and make sure you have four teammates, who are playing for the same reason as you.

The upcoming PGL Major is set to be held in Sweden’s capital of Stockholm, with the $2 Million tournament being the first Major in over two years. Sweden’s best hope for an overall victor will undoubtedly be NIP, after their impressive win at IEM Fall.

Despite the iconic Ninjas’ great success lately, Sweden will only be going to be represented by a historically low of five players at the PGL Major – the lowest in Major history.

The two Swedish mastodonts in Ninjas in Pyjamas and Fnatic has in recent years tried to strengthen the Swedish talent pool with the creation of Young Ninjas and then also Fnatic Rising. The creation of these academy teams is something f0rest sees as a very positive direction.

- NIP is doing something right with giving LNZ a shot, being a young player from Young Ninjas and now has won IEM Fall. That will hopefully give some motivation for younger Swedish players to see that it’s possible.

That grind, where you develop at a certain pace and get a feel out for the game is a healthy way of doing it, in my opinion. Jackinho and the Young Ninjas players on NIP have been thrown into tier-1 competition and are expected to deliver results right off the bat.

I think the future of Swedish Counter-Strike looks brighter than it has in the last few years. There are a lot of upcoming talents who are beginning to pop up within the scene, and it feels like the Swedish CS:GO has got reignited and realized “Hey, we are not so bad after all”, f0rest concludes.

With there being only nine days left before the start of the PGL Stockholm Major, the tier-1 scene is taking a deserved break to refuel and prepare for this year's biggest tournament. 

In the meantime, you can follow the exciting tier-2/3 events in Pinnacle Fall Series 2 and Malta Vibes Knockout Series 3, with both tournaments having reached its playoff stage. Matches will already begin at 09:00 (CEST) this Monday.

Patrik “f0rest” Lindberg has been playing competitive Counter-Strike at the very top since the mid-2000s. Over the years, the Swede has won countless titles, impressive individual awards and been such an influential character in the scene that he became an institution within the game itself.

We have sat down with the 33-year-old veteran to talk about what drives him to keep playing competitive CS:GO, despite being one of the oldest and most accoladed players in the circuit.

- My motivation comes from me loving the game so God damn much. I just love playing Counter-Strike, and I still love every single part of the game, even though I have been playing for almost 16-17 years now. No match is the same as the previous one, and it’s still so much fun to play, which drives me to keep on playing.

I still want to win tournaments and attend big events, because I don’t want to end on this note and just say “I did my part”. I want to play at the big tournaments again, especially the LAN events in front of a crowd – Grab a trophy, that’s also what continues to drive me. And I still believe we have what it takes, to do so.

Dignitas is currently placed just within Top 30 on the world ranking (#30), after two mediocre results at IEM Fall and REPUBLEAGUE Season 2. In the interview, f0rest explains how he believes that he and Dignitas could reach a much higher position if the team is willing to do the “grind”.

- Top 10-15 isn’t impossible – especially not in today’s Counter-Strike. It’s definitely something we can reach, and maybe also deeper. (…) doing a great result here at BLAST Showdown or even qualify for BLAST Finals will be an incredible thing for the team and also something which will place us much higher in the rankings, f0rest said, where he continued to explain some of the difficulties climbing the CS:GO ladder:

It’s very hard to be playing everything online and especially when you have to qualify for every single tournament since we don’t get invited. To reach that top-level is a grind – But as I’ve stated before, you have to do the grind to reach and appreciate that sweet spot.

Dignitas will kick off their BLAST Premier Fall Showdown today at 15:30 (CEST), when they take on Fiend in the Round of 16. A matchup that suits the Swede well, owing to the Bulgarings being “a team that we are very comfortable playing against, so it’s a good starting matchup for us”, f0rest states.

The former NIP star is the man behind our latest Pley of the Day. 

Today at the ongoing Pinnacle Fall Series, friberg and Dignitas are up against LDLC at the group stage. During the second map, the 29-year-old veteran managed to win an outstanding 1v4 on the lower bombsite, where he demonstrated a very impressive spray control. You can watch the play right here.

You rarely see Counter-Strike teams winning an entire tournament or event without losing some maps in the process - now imagine winning ten consecutive LAN events without losing a single map in the process. It seems almost unrealistic, however, the Swedes of Ninjas in Pyjamas managed exactly this when they dominated the Counter-Strike scene in what has been said to be the first CS:GO era.

The game we know as Counter-Strike Global Offensive came out in August 2012 and the same week was when the Ninjas in Pyjamas managed to win their first tournament. CS:GO analyst and expert Thorin states that one of the reasons for NiP's early success was due to the fact that many Counter-Strike 1.6 professionals were yet to make their move to CS:GO:

"When they won that first tournament in CS:GO in August of 2012, there was still a number of 1.6 big sized tournaments, with higher prize purses, at times, for first places than in CS:GO."

Some months later more teams began their move from Counter-Strike 1.6 to CS:GO. Team VeryGames, featuring the likes of "shox" and "kennyS", that sooner came to be Titan, posted the biggest threat to NiP but even they couldn't take down the Swedish legends. Ultimately it was Virtus.Pro to put a stop to the Ninjas and their impressive run, as they became the first team to beat NiP on the fifth of April 2013.

Since the team's glory days it has been a tumultuous ride with both ups and downs. As it currently stands there are only two out of the original five NiP players that are still competing as professional Counter-Strike players. The two remaining players are Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg and Adam "friberg" Friberg who currently play under Dignitas.

Having to rebuild their empire, with new and promising talents, was the Ninjas in Pyjamas. Whilst it is far from reminiscent of the glory days the Ninjas will always carry with them their impressive map streak of 87-0.

The profiled charity event Gamers Without Borders is in full swing and the tournament is about to go into the playoff stage. The event is a bit atypical, in the way they hand out prize money. Because the teams will not receive the massive $1.5 Million prize pool. Instead, the organizations behind the teams have picked a charity or foundation to donate their entire earnings.

Ninjas in Pyjamas’ legendary CS:GO lineup of friberg, f0rest, GeT_RiGhT, Fifflaren, and Xizt will go down in the history as one of the most dominant rosters to ever play the game. While three of them are no longer competing, friberg and f0rest are now in the Dignitas squad and have constantly reinvented themselves to try and stay at the top.

This is how the legendary Swedish duo went from being unbeatable to almost fading away, to reviving their careers and finding new roles as Counter-Strike’s veteran teachers.

Dignitas is currently home to some of the greatest Counter-Strike legends of all time. The likes of "f0rest" and "friberg" have proven that they still have what it takes to compete at a high level and are currently ranked as the 23rd best team in the world. The Norwegian player Haris "H4RR3" Hadzic had the opportunity to play alongside these incredible players, however, not for long.

After being replaced by "Lekr0" in the early stages of 2021 "H4RR3" went on to join a team called 777. Whilst his new team is far more unknown than Dignitas he seems to have found the right place to improve. In their latest game against DBL PONEY, he pulled off an incredible 1v5 ace clutch. ENCE are met by the Swedish legends of Dignitas in the semi-finals of the LOOT.BET Season 9 event. The winner of the Bo3-series will advance to the Grand Final of the event. 

Is it going to be the Scandinavians of Dignitas to pull through and secure the victory? Or will it perhaps instead be ENCE with their new stand in AWP'er "hades" to move past Dignitas and secure a spot in the Grand Finals?

The final Bo3-series in the opening round of the playoffs at the Snow Sweet Snow 3 event saw Dignitas clashing with Tricked. The Scandinavian brawl between the legendary Swedes and the Danish youngsters would determine the last Quarter-finalist of the event. Despite Tricked starting strong on Overpass it was ultimately the Swedes, led by "f0rest" and "friberg", to take home the series 2-0. 

The first map took place on Overpass and was the choice of Tricked. Both rosters have had experience playing the map and have been quite successful in their endeavors. Perhaps unsurprisingly, being the map pick of Tricked, it was the Danes to start strongest on Overpass and managed to finish their T-sided half 10-5. 

The second half, however, was all Dignitas. A comeback, orchestrated by the legendary Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg, made sure that Dignitas would start the series strong. After clawing themselves back into the game they managed to close out Overpass 16-12, only allowing their opponents two CT-sided rounds.

For the second map of the series, the two teams headed to Nuke, once again a map that is regularly played by both rosters. Posting a strong T-sided half, Dignitas ensured that they were able to finish the map without too much hassle on their CT-side. With their strategical approach going as planned they won Nuke 16-7 and took home the series with a 2-0 victory against the young Danes of Tricked.

Tricked esport

A place in the Quarter-finals is up for grabs when the two Scandinavian teams in Dignitas and Tricked go head to head in the playoffs at the Snow Sweet Snow 3 event. Will it be the Swedish legends from Dignitas? Or instead the youngsters from Tricked to prove themselves the better team today?

You rarely see Counter-Strike teams winning an entire tournament or event without losing some maps in the process - now imagine winning ten consecutive LAN-events without losing a single map in the process. It seems almost unrealistic, however, the Swedes of Ninjas in Pyjamas managed exactly this when they dominated the Counter-Strike scene in what has been said to be the first CS:GO era.

At the time of the Ninjas in Pyjamas era the team consisted of the following players:

The game we know as Counter-Strike Global Offensive came out in August 2012 and the same week was when the Ninjas in Pyjamas managed to win their first tournament. CS:GO analyst and expert Thorin states that one of the reasons for NiP's early success was due to the fact that many Counter-Strike 1.6 professionals was yet to make their move to CS:GO: 

"When they won that first tournament in CS:GO in August of 2012, there was still a number of 1.6 big sized tournaments, with higher prize purses, at times, for first places than in CS:GO." 

Some months later more teams began their move from Counter-Strike 1.6 to CS:GO. Team VeryGames, featuring the likes of "shox" and "kennyS", that sooner came to be Titan, posted the biggest threat to NiP but even they couldn't take down the Swedish legends. Ultimately it was Virtus.Pro to put a stop to the Ninjas and their impressive run, as they became the first team to beat NiP on the fifth of April 2013. 

Since the team's glory days it has been a tumultuous ride with both ups and downs. As it currently stands there are only two out of the original five NiP players that are still competing as professional Counter-Strike players. The two remaining players are Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg and Adam "friberg" Friberg who currently play under Dignitas. 

Having to rebuild their empire, with new and promising talents, was the Ninjas in Pyjamas. Whilst it is far from reminiscent of the glory days the Ninjas will always carry with them their impressive map streak of 87-0.

The second round of in the Group Stage at Snow Sweet Snow 3 is underway! This Tuesday presents two profiled matchups in forZe vs Dignitas and OFFSET vs EXTREMUM. Two fierce battles, which will feature superstars like f0rest, friberg AZR, jkaem, and BnTeT. 

Dignitas and forZe come into the second round with a win in the baggage, while OFFSET and EXTREMUM, on the other hand, suffered two 1-2 defeats.
