zonic: At some point, we need to figure out if there is some potential in the current five
The Danish head coach does not rule out potential changes in Falcons, stating that they may be necessary in an interview with BLAST.
"Build the best Counter-Strike team in the world.”
The instructions from the Falcons organization were as clear as they could be when they brought in the super-successful head coach Danny “zonic” Sørensen last winter.
But looking at Falcons’ performance in 2024 and their current form, it would be fair to say that the former Astralis coach hasn’t given his Saudi bosses what they want yet.
In fact, not at all, with Falcons having been sitting outside the Top 10 for six months and counting.
"Disappointing form"
Ahead of BLAST Fall Final, zonic also acknowledged that their current form is unacceptable in a recent interview. When asked about the team’s form, the Danish coach was blunt in his assessment:
- In a disappointing stage, I would say, the former Astralis coach said to BLAST.
He continued:
- Things have been rough this year. On top of that, we also had to adapt to a new game, not to use that as an excuse, but it's an obstacle that came into play.
To be straight up, it's not been good enough. It takes time to build a team, and I didn't expect results from the start, but I would've expected us to be further ahead than we are now and that is disappointing.
Changes needed?
During the interview, zonic was also asked whether this current five-man lineup is the right constellation for Falcons going forward.
- I've been given a task in Falcons to create the best team in the world. The Falcons guys know that it takes time, but at some point, we need to figure out if there is some potential in the current five. We need to look at their individual performances, how they're meshing as a team, their average age. We need to look at whether there is future potential and how much effort and fight they can give. At one point, we need to look at if there are other alternatives, but I focus on this when I'm not at events. (…) but we will always be and should always be looking for how we can optimize the team, zonic stated.
Falcons' campaign at BLAST Premier Fall Final has already begun, as they kicked off the Copenhagen-based tournament this Wednesday afternoon. Here they took on the world leaders from NAVI, which ended up in a clear 2-0 victory for Aleksib and company.
