Spotlight on the Top 20: FaZe

It has been a chaotic year for the ambitious organization.

In this series, we take a look at the teams that finished 2020 in the Top 20 rankings. Today we take a look at number 13.

Name: FaZe

Origin: USA

2020 has been a chaotic and disappointing year for the ambitious FaZe organization. FaZe haven’t managed to display a persistent level throughout the year, resulting in only two Grand Final appearances. This can be seen as a clear result of Faze and their heavy stack of problems outside of the server. There have been disagreements between the coach YnK and the org, there have been problems regarding the roster set-up, but most importantly, the parting with their superstar Nikola “NiKo” Kovac.

Active roster:

Håvard “rain” Nygaard

Marcelo “coldzera” David

Helvijs “broky” Saukants

Markus “Kjaerbye” Kjærbye

Olof “olofmeister” Kajbjer (Stand-in)

Transfers in 2020:

In: Bymas – Kjaerbye from North -

Out: NiKo to G2 – Bymas to mousesports

Highlight of the year - IEM New York Europe:

Going into IEM New York, FaZe haven’t managed to present a good result for months, with their last Grand Final appearance, being back in February, 8 months ago. However, it was a re-emerged FaZe side who took upon Heroic in the first match. NiKo and company steamrolled over the competition, beating strong teams as BIG, Vitality and eventually also OG in a dominant 3-0 sweep in the Grand Final.

The future:

The future of FaZe is rather unclear, and it seems to all depend on whether the ambitious organization manages to acquire a new in-game leader. Even though, having displayed a decent performance as IGL, coldzera is better when he’s free and unrestrained.

There have been rumours about a potential transfer of mousesports Finn “karrigan” Andersen, which will grand them the experienced IGL that they have been looking for. The former FaZe player has shown, in the past that he can elevate individual talents, which could benefit FaZe’s young AWPer broky.
