Five rounds from 12-10
For an hour on Tuesday it looked like Team Spirit had found their old level. They took MOUZ‘s own Nuke pick 13-2, ten rounds to two on the CT side, with sh1ro at 20-6 and magixx at 15-7. torzsi finished the map 2-14.
Then the series turned. MOUZ won Spirit’s Dust2 pick 13-8, holding Spirit to five rounds on the T side, three of them the pistol round and the two that followed. It was the third Dust2 in a row that MOUZ have won against Spirit, after 13-5 and 13-7 at ESL Pro League Season 24 this month. xertioN, the in-game leader, went 22-10 on the map.
Mirage was the decider, and Spirit had it. They came back from 5-7 at half-time, went 12-10 up and had two rounds to close the map, the series and a quarter-final place. MOUZ won both, the first without losing a player and the second when torzsi flew out of the CT spawn to deny magixx’s plant at the very end of the round. In overtime MOUZ took the first three rounds, gave two back, and PR finished the last one with two kills for 16-14.
It is the second time in four days that Spirit have lost Mirage 14-16 in overtime in Bucharest. The first, against BetBoom on Saturday, also cost them the series.
donk against everyone
donk was the best player on the server by a distance. His 66 kills were 15 more than anyone else’s, and he played Mirage at 35-20 with 123.6 ADR. His four teammates managed 61 kills between them on that map.
That is the problem MOUZ keep setting for Spirit. Against this MOUZ line-up, donk came into the series averaging a 1.10 rating over 13 maps, far below his usual level. This time he was close to his best, and it still was not enough. Spirit leaned on him more and more as the map went on, with set plays that sent him into the first fight, and once MOUZ had the answer to him there was little behind it. sh1ro followed his 20-6 on Nuke with 25-32 over the other two maps. magixx went 8-17 on Mirage and finished the series with the lowest ADR on the server, 52.5, and tN1R was 33-40.
MOUZ had nobody close to donk’s numbers and did not need one. xertioN led them with 46 kills, PR and torzsi took over on Mirage with 23 and 24 kills. All five ended between 37 and 46 kills. Their rifling core has no weak link individually, and that depth is what has carried them through this matchup.
MOUZ have now won four of their last five series against Spirit, going back to the BLAST Bounty Season 2 Finals in August. The only exception was Spirit’s 3-1 in Porto in September. MOUZ beat them twice at ESL Pro League in October, 2-0 and then 2-1 in the semi-final, before losing the final 0-3 to Vitality.
A coach in the lounge, and a decider for the top team
Spirit played without their head coach. hally was ill and watched from the player lounge, and academy coach S0tF1k stood in behind the team.
MOUZ are the fourth team into the quarter-finals, after FUT, BetBoom and Aurora, and are guaranteed at least $50,000. Their week started with a 1-2 defeat to Liquid and has since brought 2-0 wins over 9z and The MongolZ before Tuesday’s comeback.
Spirit, the HLTV number one, go into Wednesday’s final Swiss round with two wins and two losses, along with NAVI, FURIA, Liquid, Nemiga and The MongolZ. They play NAVI at . A win puts them in the playoffs; another defeat ends their tournament in ninth to eleventh place.
The result also settled a smaller race at the top of Valve’s Regional Standings. The winner was set to hold second place in HLTV’s VRS estimate on the match page. MOUZ gain 16 points and keep it with 1957, and Spirit drop 28 points to 1899 and stay third. Neither team’s Major place is affected, but it is MOUZ who head towards Singapore as the higher-ranked side in Valve’s system.
