Team Liquid beat ESL Pro League finalists MOUZ in the first round of the Swiss stage after their in-game leader went from 10 kills on Ancient to 26 on Inferno, and a different Liquid player stepped up on every map.
MOUZ arrived in Bucharest as ESL Pro League finalists and lost their first match at PGL Masters Bucharest 2026 2-1 to Team Liquid. MOUZ took their own pick, Ancient, 16-13 in overtime, but Liquid swept the overtime on Inferno to win it 16-12 and closed the series 13-11 on Mirage.
Few first round results looked less likely on paper. MOUZ are second in Valve’s Regional Standings and reached the ESL Pro League Season 24 final two weeks ago, where they lost 0-3 to Vitality. Liquid came to Bucharest as North America’s qualifier, 24th in the VRS, and on a run of three straight series losses, two of them 0-2 at 1win Private Club Season 2 earlier this week. They were heavy underdogs.

From 10 kills to 26
Ancient was the map Liquid should have won, and the one JT will want to forget. The South African in-game leader finished it with 10 kills and 21 deaths. Liquid still led 6-2 and 8-5, won the first half 7-5, before MOUZ took control and went 12-9 up.
NAF kept the map alive almost on his own. He won a round with a triple kill, EliGE killed the defuser in a post-plant clutch to make it 11-12, and NAF then won a one-against-five to force overtime, the second 1v5 clutch of his career. MOUZ won overtime 4-1.
On Inferno, Liquid’s pick, JT was a different player. He went 26-14 with 80.9 ADR, the most kills on the map, and he was the standout player. His calling held up too. Liquid won the first five rounds, then lost seven in a row to trail 5-7 at the half. They recovered to lead 12-9 with three map points, lost all three, and still won all four rounds of overtime, with a four-kill round from JT in the middle of it.
That is the kind of collapse a Liquid team would not have survived in the past, and on Saturday it did not happen. torzsi went 25-17 on Inferno and was the best player in the server for long stretches, but xelex finished the map 12-23 and Spinx 13-19.
Jorko finishes the job
Mirage, the decider, belonged to Jorko. The Bulgarian AWPer had 13 kills and 40.3 ADR on Ancient, where his impact was missing. On Mirage he went 21-16 with 91.5 ADR, the best numbers on the map.
MOUZ looked closer to their usual level on Mirage and went 10-7 up in the second half, before Liquid won three in a row, the third through a NAF clutch, and then two more to reach match point at 12-10. MOUZ pulled one back, but malbsMd won the last duel of the series against PR to close Mirage 13-11.
Over three maps no Liquid player had more than 56 kills, and only Jorko (plus six) and NAF (plus four) finished with more kills than deaths. EliGE, usually Liquid’s top fragger, ended the series with 56 kills and 62 deaths. It was a series won by a different player on each map rather than one star.
MOUZ lose on their best maps
The veto made the result stranger. MOUZ picked Ancient, a map where they had won two of their eight games over the previous three months, and won it. They then lost Inferno and Mirage, where their win rate in the same period was 86%. Their only Inferno loss before Saturday had come against Vitality.
torzsi was MOUZ’s best player over the series with 57 kills and 47 deaths, but the rest of the team never lined up on the same map. Spinx led MOUZ on Ancient with 20 kills and 17 deaths, then went 13-19 on Inferno. xertioN was their best player on Mirage, where torzsi himself fell to 9-14.
A bigger prize for Liquid
Liquid start the Swiss stage 1-0. MOUZ, like Aurora earlier in the day, now have no room for a slow week: they need three wins from their next four series to reach the playoffs.
Both teams were already sure of a place at PGL Major Singapore, as our look at the race last week showed, so the VRS points count for 2027. Liquid gain 63 and climb from 24th to 20th in HLTV’s calculation, and MOUZ drop 29 but hold second. HLTV put Liquid’s chance of an IEM USA 2027 invite at 48.4% before the match and at 68.1% with a win.
