First Four Teams Secure Playoff Spots at VALORANT Champions 2026

The landscape of the VALORANT Champions 2026 group stage shifted dramatically during the winners’ matches on Tuesday and Wednesday. After a flawless opening weekend for the Americas region, the invincible streak was broken, and the first four teams officially booked their tickets to the playoff stage in Shanghai.

100 Thieves, NRG, Team Vitality, and Paper Rex emerged victorious in their respective group-winners matches. These victories secured direct playoff qualification for the four rosters, allowing them to bypass the high-pressure decider matches entirely.

The Americas Streak Broken

Teams representing the VCT Americas league dominated the opening stage, concluding the first weekend with a perfect 4-0 series record and an unblemished 8-0 map record. However, that perfection quickly evaporated as the upper bracket matches commenced.

On Tuesday, G2 Esports suffered a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Pacific powerhouse Paper Rex in Group C. The following day, Brazilian squad LOUD was systematically swept 2-0 by EMEA representative Team Vitality in Group B.

Despite these high-profile setbacks, the Americas region still successfully advanced two teams to the playoffs. NRG battled past Karmine Corp with a 2-1 victory in Group D, while 100 Thieves confidently dismantled FUT Esports 2-0 in Group A, closing out their series with a decisive 13-5 win on Split and a gritty comeback on Lotus.

EMEA and Pacific Lock In Representatives

Team Vitality carried the banner for the EMEA region by securing their playoff spot in dominant fashion. Their series against LOUD concluded with a strong finish, ultimately resulting in a 13-7 victory on Ascent to close out the sweep and send the Brazilian heavyweights to the decider bracket.

Meanwhile, Paper Rex remains the ultimate beacon of hope for the Pacific region. By defeating G2 Esports, they guaranteed their top spot in Group C and provided crucial momentum for a region that otherwise struggled heavily in the opening round.

A Disastrous Debut for Chinese Teams

As the successful teams celebrate their playoff berths, the focus now shifts back to the elimination matches scheduled for Thursday and Friday. For the Chinese representatives, the opening weekend was nothing short of a disaster, leaving them on the brink of total elimination.

TYLOO, Xi Lai Gaming, EDward Gaming, and JD Gaming were all swept 2-0 in their respective opening matchups, leaving the host region entirely barren of map victories. Across the eight maps played by Chinese rosters, the teams averaged a mere 5.25 round wins per map. These sweeping losses immediately relegated all four Chinese teams to the lower elimination brackets.

The situation worsened today as TYLOO became the first team to be officially eliminated from the tournament. Playing in the Group C elimination match on Thursday, TYLOO fell 2-1 to Team Liquid, dropping the final map 13-2 on Lotus.

The immediate challenge for the host nation will be reevaluating their map vetoes and tactical approaches to survive the lower bracket and keep their championship hopes alive in front of the Shanghai crowd.
