M4A4 usage doubled after the latest CS:GO update
The popularity of the CT rifle has increased massively in the last couple of weeks.
Should I pick the M4A4 or the M4A1-S?
That’s a dilemma many Counter-Strike: Global-Offensive players face right now when they are to pick a rifle on the CT-side. However, the game developers from Valve have maybe made this puzzle a bit easier with their recent update to the game.
Because according to numbers from the analytical service Scope.gg, it shows that the usage of the non-silenced M4A4 has been doubled following this month’s update from presenting a nerf of the M4A1-S.
The analyzed user match data included over 2 million buy rounds played on the CT side pre-update and after the update.
Key takeaways from the statistics:
Pre-update, 50% of the users preferred the M4A1-S on their rifle rounds, and less than 10% bought the M4A4.
Even though the balance is better between the two CT rifles, the silenced M4 remains by far the more popular option, on the average over 40% players still use it now.
The shift towards the M4A4 was enough to have doubled its use rate, from 7-8% up to 15% and even 18% on certain maps.
The per-map analysis indicates that very few players prefer one or the other rifle for specific maps, but rather stick with their choice permanently, as there is little deviation between the maps. However, Ancient and Tuscan stand out a little in terms of M4A4 adoption rate.

In a recent patch, Valve revealed that they have nerfed the much-disputed M4A1-S rifle and its damage on range by adjusting its range modifier from 0.99 to 0.94. The new update also included another big change with Anubis replacing the legendary Dust2 in the competitive map pool.
