Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has officially acquired a financial stake in Fusion Esports Group, the parent company of the Danish Counter-Strike organization Astralis. The 34-year-old Belgian international completed the investment through NXTPLAY, an investment vehicle he co-owns alongside Gonzalo Vila.
Fusion Esports Group announced the transaction via a press release, bringing another high-profile traditional sports figure into the competitive gaming sector. Astralis currently holds the position as the highest-rated Danish Counter-Strike roster and sits at number 11 on the global ranking, a shift from their historical peak as the number one team in the world.
Community focus drives the investment
Courtois has maintained a documented interest in the gaming industry for several years. In the official announcement, the two-time Champions League winner outlined the rationale behind the financial commitment, pointing specifically to the social infrastructure of the space.
Gaming has always been something I have followed. What interests me the most is the surrounding culture and the communities that come with it,” Courtois said. “Fusion understands that area very well, and Astralis is a team I have known for a while.
The investment strategy appears rooted in long-term organizational expansion rather than just standard esports operations.
I like where the group is heading and the ambition to build something bigger than esports. For Gonzalo Vila and me, it felt like a natural opportunity to get involved,” Courtois added.
Fusion Esports Group welcomes the partnership
For Fusion Esports Group, the addition of Courtois brings both capital and a recognized traditional sports profile to the ownership circle. Jonas Gundersen, director of Fusion Esports Group, characterized the transaction as an obvious business decision while highlighting the goalkeeper’s personal interest in the industry.

The financial details and the exact percentage of the stake acquired by NXTPLAY were not disclosed in the official announcement.
