GamerLegion stepped up when it mattered most and secured an essential win against Rare Atom to keep their StarLadder Budapest Major hopes alive.
With elimination on the line, the European roster delivered a confident performance across Inferno and Overpass, controlling the pace from start to finish and closing out the series behind big moments from REZ and a sturdy CT side. Rare Atom put up resistance, but GamerLegion proved too strong and now continue their run in the Swiss Stage.
The match
Map 1: Inferno (Rare Atom’s pick)
GamerLegion and Rare Atom entered Inferno playing to stay alive in Budapest, and the European side opened with the pistol win. Rare Atom’s force buy worked out as they turned a 5v3 into their first T-side round to tie the game 1-1. GamerLegion’s force back did not connect, allowing Rare Atom to move ahead 3-1 after also clearing the pistols.
GamerLegion took their second round with all five alive to make it 3-2. The teams traded again to 4-3, but this time GamerLegion managed to chain two rounds and tie the score 4-4. Their streak continued as they took the lead 5-4. Two sharp entries gave GamerLegion their sixth, and they repeated the same on the following round to reach 7-4. Rare Atom managed to salvage the last round of the half, but GamerLegion still held a strong 7-5 lead after an impressive T-side.
GamerLegion carried that momentum into the second half by winning the CT pistol and follow-up to extend their lead to 9-5. A strange 2nd mid push from GamerLegion fell apart as they lost two players early, allowing Rare Atom to claim their first T-round of the half. A strong CT setup pushed GamerLegion to their 10th round, though Rare Atom answered with a clean B-split to reduce the gap to 10-7.
The back-and-forth continued as GamerLegion reached 11-7 before Rare Atom’s force buy failed, handing GamerLegion match point at 12-7. A solid B-hold closed out the map 13-7 for GamerLegion.
Map 2: Overpass (GamerLegion’s pick)
Rare Atom opened Overpass with the pistol after ChildKing secured a crucial 1v2 retake. GamerLegion’s force buy immediately answered back as they tied the score 1-1. GL built on the momentum by taking two clean rounds for a 3-1 lead. Their pace never slowed as they added two more to reach 5-1.
REZ was unstoppable, repeatedly finding entries and adding another four kills to secure GL’s sixth. His impact continued as GamerLegion surged to an 8-1 lead before Rare Atom finally struck back with two rounds to close the gap to 8-3. A fast A-take from GamerLegion wrapped up the half at 9-3.
Hypex opened the second half with four kills on dual berettas during the B hold, pushing GamerLegion to a 10-3 lead and crushing Rare Atom’s remaining hope. Rare Atom’s eco failed, giving GL their 11th, but the Chinese side refused to fold, winning the next gun round and the follow-up to stay alive at 11-5.
A single saved M4 and pistols were enough for GamerLegion to reach match point at 12-5 as PR won a key 1v1. In the final round, Rare Atom fought hard but could not close it out. GamerLegion secured the map 13-5, eliminating Rare Atom from the Budapest Major.
