The tournament location has been switched from Saudi Arabia to France at the last minute.
Earlier this week, an article reported that the Esports World Cup (EWC) would change its venue to Paris, France due to the ongoing war in the Middle East.
The EWC Foundation put out a press release, confirming that the “current regional situation” was the reason behind the decision, which they described as an acceleration of the “international rotation”.
Emmanuel Macron’s X post also confirmed that EWC will take place in Paris. Paris recently held the Olympic Games in 2024, as well as the last CS:GO Major in 2023.
Prioir to the advent of EWC, there was ESWC (Electronic Sports World Cup), a yearly esports event held in Paris, France from 2003 to 2018. That tournament operated like the upcoming Esports Nations Cup, with five players from the same country making up each team.
The ESWC brand was purchased by the EWC Foundation in 2023, likely to avoid copyright issues. EWC will now return to its roots in a sense, taking place in the site of the original “esports world cup”.
