100 Thieves take Europe’s last Major place with Buenos Aires title

Ten maps without a loss in Argentina put device, rain and Gizmy in Singapore and leave HOTU and Fnatic just over 20 VRS points short.

100 Thieves are going to the PGL Major Singapore. They beat Wildcard 2-0 in the FiReSPORTS Last Chance grand final in Buenos Aires on Sunday night, 19-16 on Cache after double overtime and 13-4 on Dust2, and the title lifts them to 18th in Europe’s VRS, the last invite in the region.

It closes a race that came down to the final night. HOTU needed to win GLuck Moscow Cyber Games earlier on Sunday to make the place their own, lost the final to 1win, and then had to watch 100 Thieves finish the job in Argentina.

Wildcard had already secured the last Americas invite with their semi-final win, so they were playing for the trophy. They still came close to taking the Major place away from 100 Thieves. On Wildcard’s Cache pick, 100 Thieves led 9-3 after their CT half, lost the second pistol round from a 5v2 and then watched Wildcard take nine of the 12 rounds after the switch to force overtime.

Wildcard reached map point twice. Nicolai “device” Reedtz ended it in the second overtime, winning a 1v1 with three seconds left on the clock. The Dane was the best player in the final with a 45-26 K-D and 84.6% KAST.

Their own Dust2 pick was never in doubt. 100 Thieves had gone 17-1 on the map over the last three months, according to HLTV, and they took it 8-4 on the T side before a 5-0 run on CT closed out the series. Alex “poiii” Nyholm Sundgren was named MVP of the event.

A tournament they had to win

100 Thieves arrived in Argentina 19th in Europe and needed the title. They beat Arena Pro, Bounty Hunters, Isurus, BESTIA and Wildcard, all 2-0, and took $40,000 of the $75,000 prize pool. Earlier in the week poiii told Dust2 Brasil that the team started each day checking results and picking out which European rivals they wanted to lose.

In the end the margins were tiny. In HLTV’s model of Valve’s 2 November standings, 100 Thieves finish on 1,511 points, three behind Eternal Fire and 22 ahead of HOTU.

In the Americas, NRG finish tenth after their quarter-final loss to Wildcard in Buenos Aires, with BESTIA 11th and paiN 12th.

A first Major for the organisation

It will be the first Major appearance for 100 Thieves. The organisation qualified for the ELEAGUE Major Boston in 2018 with the former Immortals lineup, but that team was ruled out before the event because of immigration problems, HLTV notes.

The players are not short of Major experience. device won four Majors with Astralis, all with coach gla1ve as his in-game leader, and rain lifted the trophy with FaZe in Antwerp in 2022. Around them are poiii, 20, the 19-year-old William “sirah” Kjærsgaard and in-game leader Jack “Gizmy” von Spreckelsen, who joined from Monte in July.

100 Thieves start in Stage 1 in Singapore, which begins on 24 November. FaZe, 16th on the list, also start there after a nervy October.
