Intel Extreme Masters Cologne will return to the LANXESS arena in August 2027, featuring an extended playoff schedule and a completely new stage configuration. Scheduled for August 4 to 15, the tournament will bring 24 of the highest-ranked Counter-Strike 2 teams to Germany to compete for a share of the $1,250,000 prize pool and a point in the ESL Grand Slam race.
New viewing experience at the Cathedral of Counter-Strike
For the first time outside of a Valve-sponsored Major, the competition will host four days of playoff matches in front of a live audience. From August 12 to 15, the final eight teams will compete inside the LANXESS arena. To support the extra day of arena play, ESL is introducing a 360-degree stage setup, marking a redesign of the live viewing experience at the historic venue.
Building on historic viewership records
The structural changes follow a highly successful 2026 edition, which hosted a Counter-Strike Major in Cologne for the first time in a decade. During that event, Team Falcons secured the trophy in front of a sold-out crowd. The tournament set an all-time record for Counter-Strike viewership, surpassing 100 million hours watched and achieving a peak viewership of 2.75 million.
What happened in Cologne this year was remarkable, and it once again showed what makes IEM Cologne so special,” said Marc Winther, Director of Esports for Counter-Strike 2 at ESL FACEIT Group. “It brings together the world’s best teams, fans from across the globe, an atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in Counter-Strike, and a history that has made this tournament one of the game’s most iconic events.
Winther added that the updated format allows the tournament organizer to push the event further in the coming year.
With four days of Playoffs at the LANXESS arena and the 360-degree stage design, we have an opportunity to deliver our most ambitious edition yet while staying true to what has made IEM Cologne such an important part of esports history for more than a decade,” Winther said.
