Virtus.pro have been forced to withdraw from ESL Pro League in Stockholm after Swedish border authorities denied entry to three of the team’s players. The issue stemmed from medical insurance policies that, according to VP, had previously been accepted without problems in other Schengen countries. Despite quickly arranging new policies, the players’ visas were revoked, leaving the Russian organization unable to participate.
While Virtus.pro have already engaged a local attorney to appeal the ruling, the process will take time, and the damage may already be done. Missing ESL Pro League could prove disastrous for their Counter-Strike 2 season, with Major qualification hanging by a thread.
Narrow hope for VP
The team currently sits 15th in the European Valve Regional Standings (VRS), the points system used to determine which 16 European teams will receive direct invites to the Starladder Major in Budapest. With the qualification cut-off looming on October 6, Virtus.pro are projected to cling onto that 15th spot, but the absence in Stockholm leaves them vulnerable.
Challengers such as fnatic, SAW, BetBoom, PARIVISION, and HEROIC all have opportunities to collect valuable points in the coming weeks. Any of them could surpass Virtus.pro and push the Russians outside of the top 16.
For a team with the history and pedigree of Virtus.pro, the timing could not be worse. Their fate is now out of their own hands, left to depend on how rivals perform at events they themselves cannot attend.
What was supposed to be just another step in the long road to Budapest may now define Virtus.pro’s entire year.
