Patch 13.02 has arrived, and it brings a massive structural change to the VALORANT meta. Following his absolute dominance in both ranked and professional play, Riot Games has finally issued a severe nerf to Phoenix, increasing his ultimate cost from 6 to 7 points.
At 6 points, a Phoenix player only needed to farm one ultimate orb every three rounds to guarantee four ultimates in a single half. This allowed Phoenix to completely break the economy by mindlessly spamming Run it Back on crucial buy rounds.
With this major change, the meta is shaking up. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the best agents to play on every single map in Patch 13.02.
Ascent
Ascent remains the hardest map for attackers to penetrate, requiring heavy entry presence.
- Duelists: Phoenix drops to A-Tier as a solo primary duelist due to the ultimate nerf, forcing him to rely more heavily on dash duelists to break chokepoints. Jett returns to the solo S-Tier slot.
- Initiators: With utility returning to the game, KAY/O is primed for massive success as a flex pick. Sova remains the S-Tier primary initiator; his win rate actually increases the higher up the ranked ladder you go.
- Controllers: The close-quarters nature of the map heavily favors Clove and Brimstone.
- Sentinels: If you are in low elo, stick exclusively to Killjoy and Sage. In high elo, all sentinels perform well—except for Chamber. Do not pick Chamber on Ascent.
Breeze
Breeze requires agents who can control massive, wide-open spaces and handle long-range engagements.
- Duelists: Neon returns to S-Tier, primarily driven by her massive win-rate spike in high elo. Yoru moves up to A-Tier, filling the gap left by Phoenix’s nerfs.
- Initiators: Gekko is showing strong uptick in high elo due to recent cooldown changes.
- Controllers: Harbor is finally in his element, serving as the premier S-Tier controller alongside Viper.
- Sentinels: Cypher and Chamber dominate here. Cypher anchors sites beautifully, while Chamber thrives on the long-range Operator sightlines.
Haven
The double-duelist meta is alive and well on Haven, even with the Phoenix nerfs.
- Duelists: The Neon/Phoenix combo is still the certified meta at the top level.
- Initiators: Fade has officially dethroned Sova for the S-Tier spot. Her utility cascades perfectly with double-duelist compositions, operating much faster than Sova’s recon darts.
- Controllers: Omen is the absolute go-to pick. His Shrouded Step provides crucial access to verticality (like getting on top of boxes) that teams lose when they don’t run Jett.
- Sentinels: The pro meta revolves completely around Chamber and Cypher. However, if you are in lower ranks where Neon is picked less frequently, Killjoy remains incredibly strong.
Lotus
Lotus continues to favor explosive, aggressive team compositions that can fast-execute sites.
- Duelists: The A-Tier is incredibly healthy. Reyna has been promoted, as she thrives in the double-duelist compositions that dominate this map.
- Initiators: Because of the fast-paced meta, Fade and Skye sit alone in S-Tier. The gap between them and the rest of the initiator class on Lotus is massive.
- Controllers/Flex: Viper continues to put up excellent numbers as an S-Tier flex pick if you choose not to run double duelists.
- Sentinels: Vyse is the absolute lynchpin of the Lotus meta right now, dominating in both aggressive double-duelist comps and slower Viper control comps.
Split
Split is a heavily defender-sided map where attackers can easily get bogged down in chokepoints.
- Duelists: While the Phoenix/Neon comp dominates Split in pro play, Phoenix is terrible on this map in ranked. Avoid him.
- Initiators: Skye is highly recommended. Her deep flashes allow duelists to explode onto sites, and her Trailblazer dog clears space faster than any other drone in the game.
- Controllers: The dominance of Clove on Split needs to be studied. Their post-death smokes drastically alter post-plant win rates on this map.
- Sentinels: Following recent Sentinel buffs, Killjoy has finally refined a home on Split, cementing herself in the S-Tier.
Summit (New Map)
The meta for VALORANT’s newest map is still developing, but a few clear trends have emerged.
- Duelists: Neon is the most consistent option across the board. In lower elos, stick to Raze and Jett. In high elo, Yoru is incredibly potent.
- Initiators: Summit is absolutely a recon-favored map. Sova and Fade sit alone in S-Tier. Breach is falling off rapidly as players figure out the map’s geometry.
- Controllers: Clove is the strongest solo controller. Omen, on the other hand, is performing terribly and should be avoided entirely on Summit.
- Sentinels: Sentinels dictate the pace of Summit. Cypher, Sage, and Vyse all sit firmly in S-Tier, doing phenomenal work locking down the map.
Sunset
Sunset’s mazy design allows for a massive variety of playstyles and compositional choices.
- Duelists: Raze, Phoenix, and Neon form a set trio at the S-Tier top spot.
- Initiators: Because Cypher is so heavily picked on Sunset, Sova is highly recommended—a single shock dart can clear multiple trapwires simultaneously.
- Controllers: Omen enters the S-Tier here. The longer smoke durations help stall out main pushes, and the map geometry makes it incredibly easy to get massive value out of his ultimate.
- Sentinels: This is an incredibly strong map for Vyse. Her interceptor wall is perfect for stopping hard executes, and the close-quarters nature of the map allows her to reposition safely with her abilities.
