You can earn cases through playing the game and receiving drops, or by buying them on the steam market or at external marketplaces. If you have purchased the prime status on your CS:GO profile, you are eligible for receiving drops after you have ranked up. You can receive one weapon/graffiti drop per week, while you can receive up to three CS:GO case drops per week. The case drop is not dependent on you ranking up.
There are two different pools of cases, that you can get.
The prime drop pool:
Dreams & Nightmares Case, Snakebite Case, Fracture Case, Prisma 2 Case, and Clutch Case.
The rare drop pool:
C20 Case, Horizon Case, Spectrum 2 Case, Gamma 2 Case, Chroma 3 Case, and Revolver Case.
*Other cases such as the CS:GO Weapon Case can be dropped, but are extremely rare.
