Inside the Cursed Apple: Deadlock player count and the Deadlock game state

The Deadlock player count continues to be a massive talking point, breaking records for a title that technically is not even fully out yet.

Valve has a knack for quietly building some of the most impactful titles in gaming history. For months, whispers circled the internet about a mysterious project internally dubbed “Citadel” or “Neon Prime.”

Now, we finally have the veil lifted on their newest venture. We are talking about the Deadlock game, a third-person MOBA shooter set in an alternate-history 1940s New York filled with the occult and magic.

Even though the title is still strictly invite-only, the community around it is exploding. The Deadlock player count proves that word-of-mouth works, especially when the gameplay backs it up.

If you are new to the scene or a veteran looking for a deeper understanding of what makes this experience tick, you are in the right place.

We will explore everything from the lore and mechanics to the current Deadlock player count and why the Deadlock game has captured the attention of so many so quickly. It is time to dive into the Cursed Apple and see what all the fuss is about.

What exactly changed to push the Deadlock player count so high? We have seen Valve iterate heavily based on community feedback.

As we look at the table above, it becomes clear that the developer is not afraid to make massive structural changes to the Deadlock game.

The shift from four lanes to three in early 2025 was a defining moment, directly impacting the pacing and team strategy. The Deadlock player count reacted positively to these shifts, showing that the community values a developer willing to listen and adapt.

The recent July 2026 update overhauled the underlying matchmaking logic by splitting queues into Ranked Mode and Standard Mode. This ensures that as the Deadlock player count grows, matches remain balanced for competitive players while keeping things casual for groups of friends.

These updates fundamentally alter how the Deadlock game is played from match to match.

The introduction of the Street Brawl mode earlier in the year offered a faster, single-lane experience completely separate from the core MOBA mechanics.

The steady climb in the Deadlock player count often aligns with these major content drops, proving that the iterative, playtester-driven development cycle is working. It keeps the core audience engaged while constantly refining the experience for when the title eventually opens its doors to everyone.

The world of the Cursed Apple

The setting of the Deadlock game is arguably its most captivating feature. We are transported to an alternate New York City in the 1940s, a place affectionately (or perhaps ominously) nicknamed the “Cursed Apple.”

Maelstrom - a cataclysmic event hovering over a building in the Cursed apple in the Deadlock game

This is not the New York of history books. A cataclysmic event known as the “Maelstrom” tore the veil between our world and the supernatural, flooding the streets with magic, undead creatures, and occult phenomena.

Humans were forced to rapidly adapt, blending their 20th-century technology with the newfound mystical forces.

This aesthetic is heavily ingrained in every aspect of the map. We fight through alleyways, traverse underground tunnels, and battle in areas that feel like a gothic, fantasy-infused metropolis.

The lore centers around a ritual. Two rival deities, known as “Patrons,” are offering a wish to the team of heroes who can successfully summon them.

On one side, we have the Hidden King. A chaotic deity inspired by the King in Yellow – in his make-shift base of planks and speakers in a run-down part of New York. He is standing above an effigy that is on fire and collapses when you destroy the first phase of the Patron.

On the other side of the map, we have the Arch Mother. She is a more “friendly” diety, often whispering words of comfort and promise to the heroes fighting for her side. She is located in a museum that is made of concrete, filled with books and statues – and an overall much cleaner aesthetic and vibe than the Hidden King. The base for the Arch Mother is considered the “nicer” part of the Cursed Apple.

To complete the ritual, our team must destroy the enemy’s Patron, setting the stage for the intense 6v6 battles that define the Deadlock game.

The visual design is dripping with personality. From the distinct look of the guardians and walkers we must defeat to the intricate design of the heroes themselves, the world feels lived-in and dangerous.

The Deadlock player count has undoubtedly been bolstered by this unique art direction, drawing in players who might not normally gravitate toward MOBAs but are hooked by the atmosphere and world-building.

As of late, you could only play two modes, Street Brawl (think ARAM in League of Legends) and Standard (Casual and Ranked mode combined into one). However, the recent Matchmaking update introduced Deadlock ranks separate from the Standard queue which really changed the vibe and approach to the game – and it will continue to build on that wave.

Mastering the mechanics

At its core, the Deadlock game is a blend of intense third-person shooting and strategic MOBA elements. We control one of 38 distinct heroes, each with unique abilities and playstyles.

The objective is straightforward. We push down the three lanes, defeat enemy troopers, and systematically take down defensive structures – like you would in any other MOBA.

We must destroy guardians, walkers, base guardians, and shrines before finally confronting the enemy Patron.

However, the moment-to-moment gameplay is incredibly dynamic. We have access to a surprising amount of mobility.

Mirage - a hero in the Deadlock game jumping high on the map

Sliding, double-jumping, dash-jumping, dash-slide-jumping, corner jumping, mantle sliding, wall bouncing, and using zip lines or fans to traverse the map quickly are crucial skills.

The verticality and complexity of the Cursed Apple mean that positioning and map awareness are just as important as aiming.

The Deadlock player count remains high because the skill ceiling is incredibly vast, offering deep mechanics for dedicated players to master over hundreds of hours.

The Yellow team has 213k souls vs the Blue team’s 181k souls

Economy is another vital pillar. We collect “souls” by defeating enemies and securing objectives, which we then spend at the shop to upgrade our heroes. Souls in the game work as both a currency for items and experience for leveling. Hence, it’s very important that you and your team are up on souls compared to your opponents.

The shop offers items that boost damage output, defense, and healing capabilities. Understanding what items to buy and when to buy them is the difference between a hard-fought victory and a crushing defeat.

The Deadlock game demands both sharp reflexes and a sharp mind.

The invite-only phenomenon

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Deadlock game is its current accessibility. The title is strictly in an invite-only alpha phase, meaning that the active Deadlock player count is currently somewhat limited.

You can only gain access if someone who is already a playtester sends you an invite.

This approach has created an aura of exclusivity and mystery that has ironically skyrocketed interest.

The Deadlock player count is a direct reflection of this velvet rope marketing strategy. People want what they cannot easily have.

Despite this restriction, the Deadlock player count has reached staggering numbers. Back in September 2024, it hit an all-time peak of over 171,000 concurrent players.

Even now, the daily active user base remains incredibly healthy. We often see the numbers hovering around 40,000 to 90,000 players depending on the time of day and recent updates.

The Deadlock player count proves that genuine gameplay quality is a powerful driver, even without a massive public marketing campaign. Twitch viewership also reflects this success, with tens of thousands tuning in daily to watch high-level matches.

This invite-only period allows Valve to test mechanics in a controlled environment. They can implement sweeping changes without the pressure of a fully launched live-service title.

The community playing right now is actively shaping the future of the roster. It is a unique development cycle that has fostered a dedicated and vocal player base, heavily invested in the long-term success of the project.

Why people love Deadlock

The success of the Deadlock game is not just about clever marketing or a well-known developer. It is about a fundamental understanding of what makes competitive multiplayer games fun.

We are seeing a meticulous blending of genres that should not necessarily work together, yet they do so beautifully. The frantic action of a hero shooter perfectly complements the strategic depth of a MOBA.

The Deadlock player count is strong because the core loop is incredibly satisfying. Furthermore, the character design is phenomenal. From the looks of the characters that seamlessly fit into the aesthetic of an occult 1940’s New York, to the incredible voice actors that provide some of the magnificent voice lines between characters. Vyper is a great example of a voice actor elevating their character to new heights.

Online, you can find a lot of funny montages, essay videos and clips that will explore the game and explain it in a way you like to see it – like the Kelski one.

The community has fiercely attached itself to the roster. Characters like Ivy, the gargoyle who protects Spanish Harlem, have inspired countless pieces of fan art and discussions.

Valve’s willingness to tweak designs based on community feedback, like making Ivy’s face less fearsome to match fan interpretations, shows a level of interaction that players appreciate.

You also have the confident and egoistic Lash, which players often love roleplaying while playing the game with typing sentences like “Lash does not concern himself with…” etc.

Ultimately, we are drawn to the potential of what this project can become.

The Deadlock player count reflects a community eager to be on the ground floor of the next big competitive title. It offers a fresh take on established formulas, wrapped in an art style that stands out in a crowded market.

Whether you are a MOBA veteran or a shooter enthusiast, the Cursed Apple has something to offer, and we cannot wait to see what comes next.
