Aurora’s title defence starts with a 2-1 loss to The MongolZ

The MongolZ lost their own map pick in overtime, then won Aurora’s Nuke 13-2 and closed the series on Dust2, two days after lifting their first trophy in 14 months.

Defending champions Aurora are 0-1 at PGL Masters Bucharest 2026 after a 2-1 loss to The MongolZ on Saturday morning. Aurora took Inferno 16-12 in overtime, but The MongolZ hit back with 13-2 on Nuke and 13-9 on Dust2.

The MongolZ came in as clear underdogs. Aurora are fifth in Valve’s Regional Standings, have finished in the top three at each of their last three events and won this tournament a year ago. The MongolZ were 23rd, playing at 09:00 in Bucharest after a grand final in Belgrade on Thursday night, and with a lineup that has been together for less than three weeks.

The overtime that should have broken them

Inferno was The MongolZ’ pick, and for a long time it looked like the map they would lose the series on. They won the pistol and led 4-1, but Aurora won six rounds in a row and went into the half 7-5 up. In the second half Aurora reached 12-9 with three map points, before The MongolZ won three straight rounds to force overtime.

There, Aurora were the better team. Wicadia, who finished Inferno with 26 kills and 108.2 ADR, had five kills in the last two rounds, and at 13-12 Jimpphat won a two-against-three round on B by waiting inside a smoke with the AWP. Aurora won overtime 4-0.

Losing your own map pick after saving three map points is the kind of result that can end a series. It was the one scenario The MongolZ could not afford: with Nuke, one of their weakest maps, coming next, they had to win Inferno.

Ten rounds on the CT side

Nuke was supposed to be Aurora’s map. They had won five of their seven Nuke maps over the previous three months, The MongolZ one of four. Aurora started on the T side and won two rounds in the first half. The MongolZ took the other ten, and then the first three rounds of the second half.

cobrazera, back for a second spell on the team since October, led the defence with 18 kills to six deaths and 118.9 ADR. nin9, who joined from The Huns and plays his first tier one event in Bucharest, went 15-7, and the PGL desk singled out his play at the door on the A site. On Aurora’s side, XANTARES finished Nuke with four kills and kyxsan with two.

The analysts on the PGL desk were surprised less by The MongolZ winning Nuke than by the manner of it, with Aurora never in control of a single phase of the map.

910 closes it out

Dust2 was closer. The MongolZ won the first half 7-5 on the T side and went 11-6 and then 12-7 up. woxic kept Aurora alive with an ace, and they saved one more map point, but The MongolZ won the 22nd round to close the series.

910 was the standout across the three maps. The AWPer went 22-8 on Dust2 and finished the series with 53 kills and 33 deaths, the best K-D in the match. Techno added 17 kills on Dust2, and all five MongolZ players ended the series with more kills than deaths. No Aurora player finished with more kills than deaths, and Wicadia went 7-17 on Dust2 after his big Inferno.

It extends a good week for the new lineup. The MongolZ benched DarkMeister and tikuak in September after a last-place finish at FISSURE Playground 3, signed nin9 and brought cobrazera back, and won 1win Private Club Season 2 in Belgrade on their debut on Thursday with a 3-0 win over PARIVISION in the final. It was their first title since the Esports World Cup in 2025.

A familiar slow start for Aurora

It is the second event in a row that Aurora have lost their opener. At the Thunderpick World Championship last week they fell 0-2 to 9z and still finished third. Here they need three series wins before they suffer two more defeats, while The MongolZ go into round two with a win in hand.

Neither team was playing for a Major place. HLTV’s simulation already had both clinched for PGL Major Singapore, with Aurora in Stage 3 and The MongolZ as the top Asian team. The points count for 2027 instead: the result is worth 84 VRS points to The MongolZ and moves them from 23rd to 17th in HLTV’s calculation, while Aurora lose 25 and stay fifth.

That jump has a direct value. Before the match, The MongolZ had a 51.1% chance of a BLAST Bounty 2027 Season 1 invite and 57.5% for PGL Cluj-Napoca 2027, figures that rose to 76.9% and 84.1% with a win. Both lists are drawn from the standings on 2 November, the same date as the Major invites.
