In the first semi-final of the Budapest Major Vitality took down Team Spirit 2-0 after a hard fought series to qualify for the Major Grand Finals.
Spirit looked poised to go up 1-0 in the series as they took a 12-6 lead on Mirage, but Vitality fought back and forced overtime.
In double overtime Vitality finally found their first match point of the game and converted it to win the map 19-17. On Dust2 the game looked to be another close one as the first half ended 6-6, but after the side switch Vitality found their footing and closed out the map and series 13-8.
A relieved ropz
After the game we caught Robin “ropz” Kool for an interview, where he explained why they started so slow on Mirage.
“It was hard. I think Spirit had a really good start. They definitely showed up and we just had to find ways to come back in the game.”
And it’s not the first time Vitality have come back from almost unwinnable scenarios, ropz points out.
“It’s the story of the year in a way. We have a lot of these impossible games that we should not win.”
The slow start was, according to ropz, a mix of Spirit playing well and the one-man army on Spirit: donk.
“I think they played well in the early round and donk was flying around in mid and getting entries.”
For ropz the Grand Final of the Major will be his fourth of the kind in a row. Facing him is still not known, but we do know it will be one of either FaZe or NAVI.
And as a former FaZe player himself, ropz thinks it would be quite something to face his former team in the final.
“It would be a special feeling” also adding “We lost to FaZe in the best of one in the opening match of the Major. So, could be nice to play FaZe and hopefully beat them finally.”
