PGL’s Krakow 2027 Event in Jeopardy: Venue Cancellation Raises Concerns

In an unexpected turn of events, PGL’s plans for hosting a major Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) tournament in Krakow, Poland, in January 2027 have hit a significant roadblock. On the very day of the announcement, PGL revealed that their reservation at the TAURON Arena had been abruptly canceled. The timing of this revelation raises serious questions about the tournament organizer’s preparedness and management, especially considering the magnitude of the event and its high-profile location.

A representative from the TAURON Arena informed PGL about the cancellation.

“I saw your announcement and at the same time we’ve received confirmation from the Municipality of Kraków that Krakow will be a host city and co-organizer of cyclical event which will take place in January for the next 3 years (Jan 2026, Jan 2027 and Jan 2028). I am very sorry to inform you that we have to cancel your reservation for January 18–25, 2027 (Main Arena) and January 12–20, 2027 (Small Arena).”

The unforeseen venue cancellation: A bad look for PGL

PGL’s cancellation of the TAURON Arena booking on the same day as the official announcement not only caught fans off guard but also casts a shadow over the organization’s ability to execute large-scale events smoothly. The venue cancellation, due to a scheduling conflict with another event in Krakow, leaves PGL in a difficult position. The suddenness of the issue suggests that PGL may have been either overly optimistic or poorly organized in securing their venue well in advance.

In their statement, PGL expressed disappointment, and while they have vowed to find a new venue for the event, the fact that such a significant clash occurred so close to the event’s scheduled dates is disconcerting for an organization of PGL’s stature.

“We remain committed to hosting a PGL CS2 event from January 13 to 25, 2027, despite this setback,” said PGL in their official response.

PGL’s return to Krakow: Legacy or misstep?

PGL’s connection with Krakow goes back to 2017, when they hosted one of the most memorable tournaments in esports history—the PGL Major Krakow. That event saw Gambit emerge victorious, forever cementing the city’s place in competitive gaming lore. PGL has long had an affinity for Krakow, and it seemed like a natural choice for their 2027 event.

However, this recent cancellation has cast doubt on whether PGL’s return to the city will live up to expectations. Silviu Stroie, CEO of PGL, expressed enthusiasm about building on the legacy of the 2017 Major. “PGL Major Kraków 2017 was a landmark moment for us and the esports community. The passion of the fans and the thrilling competition created unforgettable memories. We are excited to return to Krakow and build upon this legacy,” Stroie stated. Yet, such lofty promises risk losing credibility if the organization cannot even secure a venue for their flagship event.

PGL vs. BLAST: Competing for Esports space

While PGL’s focus remains on securing a new venue for their event, they also face the looming presence of BLAST, which will hold their Bounty Season 1 during the same period. This partially online competition will run concurrently with PGL’s 2027 event, meaning the two organizations will be competing not just for fan attention, but for media coverage and player participation. This mirrors similar scheduling conflicts such as in 2025 and 2026 where PGL finds itself in competition with ESL events.
