The IEM Cologne Major 2026 has reached a critical point for the North American Counter-Strike scene. Friday marks the final day of Stage 1, where the last three spots for Stage 2 will be decided. Teams in the 2-2 bracket of the Swiss system have no more room for error.
Liquid and NRG face elimination matches to join M80 in Stage 2
It is a big day for NA Counter-Strike, as two NA teams have the chance to qualify for the next stage of the Major. The region already had M80 as a representative in Stage 2 after they qualified yesterday by defeating NRG. Looking at the wider Americas region, 9z, paiN, and Legacy were qualified to start their run in Stage 2, while FURIA is the sole team from the Americas to start directly in Stage 3.
High stakes in the final Swiss bracket
The action begins with a domestic clash between two Chinese rosters, TYLOO and Lynn Vision. Both teams will fight to extend their tournament run, guaranteeing that at least one of the squads will advance to the next phase in Germany.
Following the opening match, Liquid will face the Australian roster of FlyQuest. Liquid secured their tournament lifeline with a hard-fought victory over HEROIC on Thursday, eliminating the European squad in the process. FlyQuest presents a different challenge, setting up an interesting series where FlyQuest rifler Justin “jks” Savage will compete against his former organization and some of his previous teammates.
The final match of the day features NRG taking on the German home crowd favorites, BIG. NRG missed their first qualification opportunity against M80 and now face a difficult task against a European team looking to stay alive in front of their local supporters.
