ESL has announced that Intel Extreme Masters will return to the United States in 2027. Following the tournament organizer’s recent event in Atlanta, the company finalized the format, prize distribution, and scheduling details for the upcoming tournament. The event forms part of a broader allocation exceeding 11,450,000 dollars designated for teams and players throughout the 2027 ESL Pro Tour season.
Tournament format and schedule
The event is scheduled to take place from April 5 to April 11, 2027, with the specific host city yet to be revealed. Teams will arrive at the location on April 3 for media obligations on April 4, with departures scheduled for April 12. The competition will be held entirely in person as a LAN tournament environment.
The tournament structure features a 16-team group stage split into two double-elimination groups of eight. The top four teams from each group will advance to an eight-team single-elimination playoff bracket, which will be played in front of a live arena audience. The playoff schedule spans three days: Friday will feature four quarter-finals, Saturday will hold the two semi-finals, and Sunday will conclude with a third-place decider followed by the grand final.
Qualification framework and team invites
The 16 participating teams will be determined primarily through the Valve Regional Standings (VRS). Team invitations will follow the first monthly VRS publication of January 2027, while official tournament seeding will rely on the March 2027 publication. The formal selection process will prioritize regional VRS listings before utilizing global standings.
The team allocation consists of 11 global VRS invites for teams ranked 1st through 11th. Single invite slots are reserved for the top-ranked teams in North America and South America. The remaining three tournament positions will be filled via closed qualifiers. The Americas closed qualifier will run on US servers using the Americas VRS list for invitations, while the global closed qualifier will take place on European servers using the global VRS list. Standard eligibility exceptions apply, and players or teams currently banned by ESL, FACEIT, or the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) will not be permitted to participate.
Prize distribution and financial updates
The tournament carries a total prize pool of 1,000,000 dollars, alongside distinct club rewards for participating organizations. The tournament champion will secure 125,000 dollars in prize money alongside a 170,000 dollar club reward. The runner-up will receive 50,000 dollars in prize money and a 120,000 dollar club reward. Financial allocations scale downward through the placements, concluding with the 13th through 16th place finishers receiving a flat 4,000 dollars in prize money without an accompanying club reward.
ESL also confirmed an adjustment to its Annual Club Incentive model for the 2027 season. The distribution of incentive points will incorporate playoff viewership into the overall equation. The final point distribution will be determined by the combined average concurrent viewership across the entire tournament duration rather than isolating specific stages.
Changes to the 2028 calendar
Alongside the 2027 project details, ESL issued a schedule update for the following year. The dates for the third ESL event of the 2028 season have been modified. The 2028 tournament is scheduled to run from April 8 to April 16, with an arrival date set for April 6, media obligations on April 7, and departures on April 17.
