“Daring to make moves”: zonic on reaching his sixth Major final with Team Falcons

Team Falcons have secured their spot in the Grand Final of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 after a grueling three-map series against Team Spirit. The semi-final matchup went down to the wire, concluding in overtime on the decider map before Falcons finally edged out their opponents.

For head coach Danny “zonic” Sørensen, the victory marks his sixth appearance in a Major Grand Final. Holding a perfect record in his five previous final appearances with Astralis and Team Vitality, the Danish coach is now looking to secure another trophy with his new roster, when they face FURIA in the Grand Final in Cologne.

Overcoming mental hurdles

The path to the final has required significant mental adjustments from the team. When asked about the defining moments of the semi-final victory, zonic pointed directly to the team’s willingness to take risks and play without fear.

Daring to play to be honest,” zonic said. “Daring to make moves. This is something that we have been really putting focus on, especially after karrigan joined.

The coach explained that the team had to address their mindset following previous defeats to Team Spirit. Instead of the usual quick post-match press routine, the squad spent an hour and a half in the player room discussing their mental state. This focus on psychological resilience carried over into their recent boot camp and translated onto the stage in Cologne.

Today I really saw it, the last two days at least, but also throughout the entire tournament,” zonic explained. “I saw a team that were playing to win and not to lose.

The impact of karrigan

The recent addition of in-game leader Finn “karrigan” Andersen has clearly influenced the team’s dynamic. zonic highlighted the veteran’s leadership style, which often involves taking the initiative on the server rather than just making calls from behind the pack.

He has so much experience of leadership, he goes first,” zonic said, referencing specific rounds against Team Vitality and Team Spirit where Karrigan took the hardest entry paths. “He just says flash for me and he goes in, kills two, opens up the round and people are following it. That’s the leadership that he brings and the way he activates the players.

While individual performances from players like the Bosnian star NiKo and TeSeS have been strong throughout the event, zonic maintains that the collective mentality remains the primary focus heading into the final.

I’m not going to rely on the individuals. I just want to see the same mentality that I’ve seen throughout the tournament,”he stated.

The recipe for a sixth Major victory

As Falcons prepare for the Grand Final, zonic draws on his extensive experience in high-pressure matches. Having won five out of five Major finals, he knows exactly what type of performance is required to lift the trophy.

All the five majors that I won, every single time we saw these ballsy plays, we saw this pushing a smoke, making a stupid move, taking a risk,” zonic concluded. “This we have to see tomorrow again.

Team Falcons and FURIA will go head-to-head tomorrow for the title in Cologne at 17.00 CEST.
