NAVI’s route to Friday has run through the Major champions twice. They beat the Major champions Team Falcons 2-0 on Monday and then knocked them out 2-1 on Wednesday, winning 26 of the last 33 rounds after dropping Ancient. The only defeat was a 2-1 to FURIA on Tuesday, with two of the three maps going to overtime.
Ihor “w0nderful” Zhdanov was at the centre of both Falcons wins. The AWPer went 19-5 on Ancient on Monday and 25-4 on Inferno on Wednesday, and those are his two highest-rated maps on HLTV’s record of his last 100, which goes back to April. Across the group stage only MOUZ’s Spinx has a higher HLTV rating than him in Beijing, and b1t is not far behind. NAVI have two of the event’s four best players by that measure, and MOUZ have the other two.
PARIVISION, with Jame on the AWP, beat G2 and Liquid to reach the Group B upper final. MOUZ then showed how big the gap can be, beating them 13-2 on Ancient and 13-9 on Mirage.
FURIA after the first loss
FURIA came to China as the new world No. 1 in HLTV’s ranking and as PGL Masters Bucharest champions. They beat FaZe and NAVI to reach the upper final, but The MongolZ took Group A 2-1 on Wednesday, winning FURIA’s own Cache pick. It was their first series defeat since Spirit beat them in Bucharest on 26 October.
molodoy went 57-43 in that series, but KSCERATO went 21-33 over the last two maps and FalleN finished on 32-53.
BetBoom have taken the long way. They beat 9z, lost 2-0 to MOUZ, swept Aurora and then survived Liquid’s comeback on Nuke to win 2-1. FURIA have the recent history on their side: they beat BetBoom on Cache at both the Thunderpick World Championship and in Bucharest.
MongolZ and MOUZ already in the semi-finals
The MongolZ are the surprise of the week. nin9 joined on 5 October, and the new lineup dropped their opening map to Legacy before beating Legacy, HEROIC and FURIA. 910 finished the FURIA series 61-34.
MOUZ have not lost a map. They beat TYLOO, BetBoom and PARIVISION 2-0 each, and torzsi and Spinx are both in the event’s top four by HLTV rating. Both teams have at least fourth place and $120,000 secured.
