Zero Maps Won: The Unprecedented Collapse of Host Nation China at VALORANT Champions 2026

The opening round of the VALORANT Champions 2026 group stage delivered an astonishing narrative of regional disparity in Shanghai. From Thursday to Sunday, the 16 best teams in the world began their campaigns across four groups in what is the final championship event of the franchised era. While the Americas region executed a flawless opening weekend, the Chinese host teams suffered a catastrophic collapse in front of a peak opening-day audience of over 605,800 viewers.

The Americas Region Achieves Perfection

Teams representing the VCT Americas league dominated the opening stage, concluding the weekend with a perfect 4-0 series record and an unblemished 8-0 map record. The winning streak commenced on Thursday when G2 Esports swept TYLOO in Group C, overcoming an early deficit on Lotus before securing a commanding 13-3 victory on Sunset.

This momentum carried through the weekend. On Friday, NRG dispatched the Pacific region’s Nongshim RedForce 2-0 in Group D.

Saturday featured Brazilian powerhouse LOUD systematically taking apart China’s EDward Gaming 2-0 in Group B with decisive wins on Lotus and Summit. Finally, 100 Thieves completed the perfect regional sweep on Sunday in Group A by defeating Korea’s T1 2-0, relying on heavily structured baseline plays to secure victories on Summit and Ascent.

The Statistical Reality of the Opening Round

The flawless run by the Americas stood in stark contrast to the rest of the world, particularly the host nation. The opening round exposed significant gaps in tactical preparation and execution among the competing regions.

A Disastrous Debut for Chinese Teams

For the Chinese representatives, the opening weekend was nothing short of a disaster. TYLOO, Xi Lai Gaming, EDward Gaming, and JD Gaming were all swept 2-0 in their respective matchups, leaving the host region entirely barren of map victories.

The underlying statistics reveal the severity of this underperformance. Across the eight maps played by Chinese rosters, the teams averaged a mere 5.25 round wins per map. Xi Lai Gaming, making their international debut in Group D, suffered a heavy 2-0 defeat to EMEA champions Karmine Corp on Friday, dropping their maps 13-3 and 13-6. JD Gaming managed a slightly closer contest against FUT Esports on Sunday, though they still fell 13-10 on Summit after being routed 13-1 on Ascent. These sweeping losses immediately relegated all four Chinese teams to the lower elimination brackets, placing them one series away from tournament elimination.

Mixed Fortunes for EMEA and Pacific

Outside of the extremes experienced by the Americas and China, the EMEA and Pacific regions recorded mixed results. EMEA finished the opening round with a strong 3-1 record. Karmine Corp and FUT Esports secured comfortable 2-0 sweeps, while Team Vitality survived a grueling three-map series against Global Esports on Saturday, eventually claiming the decider map on Summit 13-11. Team Liquid was the sole EMEA squad to falter, falling 2-1 to Paper Rex in the opening match of Group C on Thursday.

That victory for Paper Rex proved vital for the Pacific region, which otherwise struggled significantly. With T1, Nongshim RedForce, and Global Esports all losing their opening matchups, Paper Rex now stands as the only Pacific representative remaining in the upper bracket.

As the tournament moves toward the subsequent rounds, the upper bracket winners will compete for direct playoff qualification, while the lower bracket teams face immense pressure to keep their championship hopes alive. The immediate challenge for the host nation will be reevaluating their map vetoes and tactical approaches to avoid a total regional elimination in the coming days.
