The VALORANT community is constantly discovering new agent interactions and mechanics that can completely flip a round on its head. From big-brain ultimate counters to inescapable Sentinel traps, mastering these unconventional tactics is a guaranteed way to catch your ranked opponents off guard.
The Ultimate Iso Counter (Sage)
When you are locked in a 1v1 against an Iso and both of you have your ultimates available, Sage has a game-winning trick up her sleeve [02:46]. Instead of immediately reviving a downed teammate to force a 2v1, stand over your teammate’s body and intentionally let Iso pull you into his ultimate arena.
Right as the teleport animation begins, cast your Resurrection. You will be pulled into the 1v1 duel, but your newly revived teammate will spawn safely in the real world. They can then simply sprint to Iso’s physical spawn marker and secure a free kill the moment he returns, completely neutralizing his ultimate advantage.
Killjoy’s Inescapable Split Trap
Killjoy can guarantee round wins on Split’s A-site by utilizing an incredibly deceptive Lockdown setup [05:45]. Before the barrier drops, throw two Nanoswarms behind the central billboard wall – one in each corner.
Play off-site toward Heaven. When the attackers commit to the plant, activate your Lockdown ultimate. Because the radius covers the entire site, the only “safe” spots for attackers to hide without being detained are those two deep corners. Once they tuck into those pockets, detonate the Nanoswarms. Because the grenades are placed on the opposite side of the wall, they cannot be shot or destroyed, resulting in free eliminations.
Next-Level Fake Flashing
Fake flashing by tossing a classic pistol around a corner is a well-known trick, making it easy for high-level players to read and ignore. To make your fake flashes truly convincing, use your actual utility [04:12].
For example, throwing a Killjoy Nanoswarm or a Cypher Cyber Cage around a corner looks like a genuine utility deployment. Enemies will often instinctively turn their crosshairs to break the trap or dodge the radius. By immediately peeking directly behind your thrown utility, you can easily catch defenders with their crosshairs out of position.
The Choke Point Trap (Brimstone & Fade)
Defending narrow choke points – like Split’s B-Main – requires patience [08:00]. When you drop a smoke to stall a push, stand close to the edge with your utility pre-equipped.
Do not dump your utility blindly. Instead, wait for the attackers to throw their own flashes or recon through the smoke. The moment their utility flies through, they will almost always blindly follow it. This is your cue to drop a devastating combo, such as a Fade Seize paired with a Brimstone Incendiary. Catching them as they path forward creates a massive, inescapable kill zone.
Unconventional Post-Plants and Angles
- Omen on Breeze
[04:51]: Plant the spike on the far right side of the Pyramids. Use Shrouded Step to reach the high boxes near A-Main. From here, you can cast a Dark Cover over the main entrance and hold a completely unexpected, elevated line of sight directly onto the defuser. - Sage on Haven
[07:18]: On B-site, place your Barrier Orb horizontally to completely cover the small box sitting next to the large central box. Enemies will assume the area is completely walled off, giving them a false sense of security. You can then jump onto the hidden small box and peek directly over the top of your own wall for a surprising off-angle.
