ENCE hits reset: Organization benches main CS2 roster to return to Finnish roots

Yesterday, it was revealed that the entire main CS2 roster and coaching staff have been moved to the bench and are now available for transfer.

Finnish esports organization ENCE has announced a massive strategic pivot, confirming they are stepping away from international competition to rebuild their Counter-Strike division entirely around domestic talent.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the entire main CS2 roster and coaching staff have been moved to the bench and are now available for transfer. The move marks a dramatic reset for the organization, signaling the end of their international project as they look to build a sustainable foundation for the future. You can read the full statement here.

The End of the International Era

This decision stems from the rising costs and competitive difficulties within the current top-tier Counter-Strike ecosystem. Continuing to invest heavily in international rosters capable of reaching the absolute highest levels of play has become increasingly difficult for mid-market organizations.

This marks the official close of a challenging chapter for the team. The organization famously pivoted away from a purely Finnish lineup in January 2021, bringing in now household names such as Lotan “Spinx” Giladi, Marco “Snappi” Pfeiffer, Pavle “Maden” Bošković, Olek “hades” Miskiewicz, and Paweł “dycha” Dycha. That international core eventually found immense success, with the peak of their era arriving in 2023. Guided by Snappi and coach Eetu “sAw” Saha, ENCE became one of the most feared teams in the world. Since their departure, ENCE has undergone multiple transfers and rebuilds, but the magic of 2023 has remained elusive.

Instead of trying to force another expensive international iteration, the leadership and majority shareholders have opted for a long-term, grassroots approach. The clear goal moving forward is to rebuild a Counter-Strike team where Finnish talent will be at the core and to develop the next generation of Finnish stars.

No podi in Finnish lineup

The immediate consequence of this pivot is the benching of the active Main roster and its coaching staff. Notably, this includes Finnish AWPer Paavo “podi” Heiskanen. Despite fitting the new domestic criteria, podi wishes to continue pursuing Tier 1 Counter-Strike rather than joining a developmental, localized project, a decision that has been fully respected and understood by the organization’s management.

What Lies Ahead for ENCE

While the main team undergoes a complete teardown, ENCE’s developmental pipelines remain intact.

  • ENCE Academy: Will continue operating normally through the transition.
  • ENCE Prospects: Will proceed as planned, participating in the upcoming Finnish youth league, NUKE-Liiga Season 2, which kicks off on March 18th.

By returning to their roots, ENCE is hoping to recreate the cultural phenomenon that birthed the legendary #EZ4ENCE meme, this time with a new generation of Finnish stars. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see exactly who will don the jersey next, as the specific steps of this new chapter will be presented in the near future.
