The MongolZ and B8 entered their Round 2 matchup at the IEM Cologne Major seeking redemption after dropping their opening matches yesterday, with The MongolZ falling 2-1 to BetBoom and B8 suffering a 2-0 defeat against FURIA. In a series defined by a closely contested opener and a one-sided conclusion, The MongolZ claimed a 2-0 series victory, leaving B8 fighting for their tournament life.
Overtime drama on the first map
The series began on B8’s map pick, where The MongolZ immediately took control. Playing on the CT side, the Mongolian squad won the first seven rounds against an unusually unstructured B8 offense. The roster struggled to find openings or exploit timings, frequently running out of time and options. This lack of coordination resulted in a heavy 10-2 deficit at halftime.
B8 attempted a comeback in the second half, securing the first two rounds before The MongolZ answered back in the third, severely limiting the margin for error for B8. Both teams struggled on their offensive halves, experiencing difficulties penetrating the bombsites. While sniper Usukhbayar “910” Banzragch performed at a high level for The MongolZ, his impact was limited during their T-side struggles. At an 11-8 scoreline, Ayush “mzinho” Batbold managed to clear the A-site, securing a twelfth round for The MongolZ to halt B8’s momentum.
The remainder of the regular time became heavily dependent on opening kills, a trend that dictated every round in the second half. During this stretch, B8’s youngest player, Danylo “s1zzi” Vinnyk, delivered a crucial 1vs2 clutch to push the map into overtime. In the added rounds, B8 took an early lead by winning the first two, but The MongolZ salvaged the final T round. Relying on their defensive strengths, The MongolZ closed out the map by winning three consecutive CT rounds in the second half of overtime.
Overpass provides a quick resolution
Following a mentally taxing first map, the series transitioned to Overpass. The MongolZ carried their momentum forward, quickly securing four rounds on their T-side to establish a strong foundation. B8 found themselves in multiple advantageous situations on their CT side but consistently failed to convert them into round wins.
The MongolZ capitalized on these mistakes, building a dominant 9-3 lead by halftime. The substantial deficit proved too difficult for B8 to overcome, leading to a swift conclusion to the map and the series winning 13-3.
With this result, The MongolZ improve to a 1-1 record in Stage 3. B8 falls to the bottom bracket and will play their first elimination match tomorrow.
