The MongolZ were so close, yet so far from winning the BLAST.tv Austin Major.
The Mongolian underdogs kicked off the night in style, storming past Vitality on Mirage to take a 1-0 lead. But from there, the favorites took over, crushing The MongolZ on Dust2 and closing out the series with a dominant showing on Inferno.
After the loss, we spoke with Sodbayar “Techno” Munkhbold about the heartbreaking defeat, and where he felt things fell apart.
– We were confident after the first map. However, then we lost the second map. On the last map, we lost a force round after the pistol round. I think that affected our mentality and game plan so much. Everything just changed.
Techno also pointed toward their struggles on Inferno, highlighting the difficulty of the iconic map.
– It’s a very complicated map, Inferno. There are so many utility fights in the positions, it’s not only gunfights. If you can’t win these utility figths and get map control, then you can’t do anything. It’s a really hard map.
Despite the loss, The MongolZ can look back on a groundbreaking tournament. They became the first East Asian team ever to reach a Major Grand Final.
– It’s been a really good tournament for us, but in the end, people always want to go forward. We wanted to win today, but it didn’t went well, Techno told Pley.
