Álvaro “SunPayus” García lifted a long-awaited trophy at BLAST Open London, and the Spanish AWPer could not hide what it meant. Speaking to Pley.gg the final, he summed it up simply:

“After two years, I finally got another trophy.”

A step forward with his new team

Reflecting on the run, SunPayus said the result shows this new-look G2 is trending the right way.

“I think we are developing really fast. This is a good sign that we are on the right path.”

He admitted he felt the fatigue of a long event. Playing a best of five that went the full distance against Vitality is not easy.

“I was a bit off today, I am really tired, I think everyone is, but the boys carried me. I am super happy and proud.”

After a tough start to the year playing for HEROIC, the veteran believes his level is climbing with the new lineup.

“I still need a bit more time to be consistent, but I am pretty happy and proud of myself.”

The grind of a best-of-five

SunPayus pointed out the mental toll of a long series. Five maps against a tactically strong Vitality and one of the maps even going to overtime meant the series lasted almost five hours-

“Best of five is super hard, very tough to play. You use your brain so much for so long, you just need to keep going.”

SunPayus did not shy away from the bumps on the road that led back to the top. He started the year playing for HEROIC, but got bought out by G2 together with sAw, the teams Finnish coach, in July. Prior to that he had an almost year long stint for Falcons.

“It was a roller coaster of emotions. When the game changed to CS2 and I changed teams, the dynamics in Falcons were not working, we were not functioning as a team, so I had to step down.”

Now, with his current roster, the confidence is back.

“I am really happy and proud of who I am right now. I will be better with more time. We are going in the right direction, and I am really happy with the team.”
