Last month, Valve announced the decision to scrap the Major Regional Qualifiers (MRQs) for the upcoming Budapest Major. Instead, all 32 attending teams will be determined via Valve’s Regional Standings (VRS).
The move immediately started a debate in the CS community, sparking criticism towards Valve by various people.

We have had the chance to speak with Peter “dupreeh” Rasmussen – one of the most experienced in qualifying for Majors – about the removal of the Major qualifiers.
And he does not seem to agree with the game developer.
– I’m not completely set on all the details about the VRS, but overall, I feel like the change is not for the better. I think it’s only for the worse, dupreeh told Pley.
dupreeh further elaborated:
– It’s damaging in a way that the qualifiers would always have you on kind of equal terms, where you would be able to just go in and perform. If you actually had a really good qualifier, especially for the smaller regions, you would have a chance of making the Major. I think that is going to be more difficult nowadays.
– It creates some kind of a boundary, where a lot of teams will not have a chance to qualify, simply because either they don’t play enough, or they don’t make deep enough runs. And then maybe you’re just not good enough. There are definitely things you can change for the VRS.

For years, RMRs were the defining gateway to Major qualification, often packed with drama, heartbreak, and career-defining moments. The RMRs were then replaced by the MRQ, which has a similar format.
dupreeh did not hold back when talking about how he misses the old qualifier.
– I’m a guy who really missed the RMRs. It’s been part of my Major journey for a long time. I’ve never really been a fan of the online qualifier because a Major deserves better, and I think the players deserve better.
– We miss all the emotion, and it’s a good foundation to build upon and create a good storyline. So, I’m definitely missing that.
