The competitive matchmaking platform FACEIT is reintroducing cross-team voice chat during half-time. The feature returns for a one-week test period at the beginning of Season 9, running from August 5 to August 12.
A relic from past times in Counter-Strike
Cross-team communication during half-time is a familiar concept for veteran players. Valve officially removed halftime and end-of-match cross-team voice chat from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on October 1, 2015. At the time, the developer stated the removal was intended to give players uninterrupted time to strategize privately with their teammates. The general consensus within the player base interpreted the update as a direct effort to curb trash talk and in-game toxicity, as the brief windows of open communication frequently resulted in chaotic exchanges between competing teams.
The community vote and trial details
The return of the feature on FACEIT comes as a result of a community vote. According to an official announcement from the platform, 79% of the 106,647 cast votes were in favor of bringing back the open voice chat.
During the designated test week, the voice channel will open between both teams at the half and close once the sides switch.
Player reactions and toxicity concerns
The announcement has generated mixed expectations from professional players and community figures regarding how the communication window will be utilized today.
Streamer Austin shared his prediction on Twitter, suggesting that the initial day will feature content creators yelling in attempts to farm clips. He added that subsequent days will likely devolve into silence, insults about player skill, or opponents calling fake strategies for the upcoming pistol round.
Brazilian professional player Marcelo “coldzera” David also addressed the update on Twitter. He warned users playing on FACEIT to be careful about getting banned for toxicity once the side swap voice chat opens up for everyone.
Adjusted ban policies for Season 9
In response to the community fears regarding a potential wave of bans, FACEIT Community Manager Darwin clarified the platform’s stance. He pointed out that FACEIT implemented a new banning policy for Season 9, designed specifically to be softer on banter and general trash talk.
The official FACEIT update details that the revised ban policy takes effect on August 5. The platform will enforce longer bans for severe offenses such as cheating, smurfing, stream sniping, and repeated abuse. However, ban durations will now weigh the context of the offense more closely, intentionally leaving more room for harmless banter among players.
