FUT and Spirit set to clash for EWC title with same perma-ban

The lop-sided match-up could be tilted by the teams sharing the same least favorite map.

FUT and Team Spirit will face off today for the first time in CS2 history with the Esports World Cup (EWC) title on the line.

Team Spirit come in as a heavy favorite, having defeated Team Vitality at this tournament and boasting the best rifler in the world, Daniil ‘donk’ Kryshkovets.

Spirit’s race against time

Spirit had a shaky start to the tournament, with donk admitting that there were struggles they endeavored to fix ahead of their match against Vitality. It seems to have worked out, defeating their nemesis and having their cleanest victory yet against Legacy.

FUT’s trial by FURIA

FUT are one of the most exciting teams in CS2, boasting young talent that is unafraid to show it on the server. One of the most aggressive teams out there, all of their players are subject to get in the enemy’s face, and shockingly likely to succeed at it.

They have had struggles in performing with their usual aggression under the brightest lights. However, they yesterday took down FURIA, a team that dwarfs them in reputation, in a watertight series that went the distance.

It is difficult to say whether this will be enough to defeat Spirit in their current form, now with Dimitriy ‘sh1ro’ Sokolov in form as well. Even FUT’s IGL, Aulon ‘Krabeni’ Fazlija, said to us that they would rather play Legacy in the final than this Spirit.

However, this is a matchup we have not seen in CS2 yet. On top of that, FUT may have an edge in the map veto to exploit.

Will FUT risk letting Inferno through?

The map veto is the process through which the maps for his best-of-five grand final will be decided. Spirit have consistently banned Inferno throughout their entire history with this roster and since 2024.

As it happens, FUT also avoids Inferno wherever possible. They banned it first in all but one match this event, where it was banned by their opponent, TYLOO.

Knowing how predictable Spirit might be with Inferno, FUT may let it through, instead banning Nuke, which their captain called “their worst map”.

This would let Ancient and Anubis through in the series, two of FUT’s comfort maps where their players are able to go for early aim duels.

However, Spirit are no slouches on these maps, boasting 85+% win-rates on them. FUT would have to deal with Spirit on Mirage and Dust2 as well, and on the new map, Cache, as well.

The map veto by no means gives FUT an advantage in the series, but it is an opportunity to exploit Spirit’s predictable map veto if they are willing to take the risk.
