The global esports industry reached 3.3 billion hours of watch time in 2025, according to data from Esports Charts. This 1.5% increase from the previous year marks a new peak for the sector, surpassing engagement levels seen during the pandemic. While several titles contributed to this total, Counter-Strike acted as the primary engine for the overall growth of the industry.
Counter-Strike offsets industry declines
Counter-Strike experienced a 33% increase in hours watched throughout 2025. This growth was significant enough to compensate for the collective losses seen across the six titles with the largest viewership decreases. The increase in engagement suggests a consolidation of the market around the most established titles.
Capital and calendar saturation
High levels of investment from tournament organizers and sponsors, particularly within the betting and gambling sectors, fueled the growth of the game. This funding supported a more frequent competitive calendar. The availability of top-tier matchups and the inclusion of high-profile co-streamers ensured a constant stream of content for the audience, extending the total time spent watching the title.
The world’s most valuable esport
Financial data from 2025 shows that the total prize pool for the esports industry reached $272,600,000, which is a 15% rise compared to 2024. Counter-Strike became the most valuable esport globally as its prize pool grew by more than $9 million. This increase allowed the game to surpass Dota 2 for the top position in terms of financial rewards.
Broader market trends
While Counter-Strike led the market, other established titles also saw gains. League of Legends expanded its prize pools by $5 million, and Valorant maintained steady financial growth. The general rise in viewership across the industry was further supported by the widespread adoption of co-streaming, where independent creators host alternative broadcasts to reach specific community segments. Mobile esports remained a factor in the total figures, representing 25% of all viewership.
The 2025 data indicates that the industry is increasingly reliant on a small group of high-performing titles to maintain its upward trajectory. Counter-Strike currently leads this group in both audience engagement and financial scale.
