Astralis targets NEO as first international coach in the organization’s history

Following the recent departure of Casper “ruggah” Due, Astralis is preparing to hire a non-Danish head coach for the first time. According to a report published today by HLTV, Filip “NEO” Kubski will take over the position.

A shift in team culture

The decision to hire an international coach aligns with recent statements from Astralis CEO Jonas Gundersen. In an interview with Pley.gg, Gundersen detailed the reasoning behind moving away from a strictly Danish leadership model.

I think I can say that we’re probably not going to go with another Danish coach, right? We’re going international,” Gundersen stated. “There’s something about the homogeneous culture of Denmark where I think we were a victim of our own success sometimes. So, we got complacent. So, I think we’re trying to rather than having a Danish culture led, I think we’d like to try a more international performance culture, but still keeping our Nordic roots and keeping Danes into that, right? So, I think it’s a bit of a shift of what we had before.

NEO brings tier-one experience

If the signing is finalized, NEO will bring immediate championship experience to the Astralis camp. The 39-year-old coach previously managed the FaZe roster from July 2023 until March of this year.

During his tenure with FaZe, NEO guided the squad to four tournament trophies and reached the Grand Final at three Majors. His time with the organization ended after a competitive downswing resulted in FaZe missing the Cologne Major.

Before transitioning to coaching, NEO built a long career as a professional player. He was a core part of the Virtus.pro roster that secured the 2014 Major title in Katowice. The transition to an international coach marks a definitive end to Astralis’ historical reliance on a purely Danish coaching staff, establishing a new operational structure for the team.
