Apex Legends season 27 ranked matchmaking changes

Apex Legends has just revealed major updates to ranked matchmaking and shared the full Season 26 rank distribution data. The changes aim to improve competitive balance by limiting matchmaking ranges for high-ranked players and refining how Masters and Predators queue together.

New matchmaking rules

Effective immediately, Masters players and above can now only match with Diamond and Apex Predator players. This adjustment has already been rolled out across all platforms and is designed to ensure fairer, more skill-based lobbies at the top of the ladder.

Respawn confirmed that Season 27 will keep these matchmaking parameters while further tests continue for future splits. Masters and Predators will still be able to queue with high-ranked Diamond players, but broader matchmaking ranges are now restricted.

“We’re continuing matchmaking tests through Season 27 to ensure high-skill lobbies remain competitive,” said Respawn. “This will be the only ranked matchmaking change for the rest of this split.”

Respawn also shared the official Season 26 ranked distribution, showing the percentage of players in each rank as of mid-season.

Diamond and above breakdown:

  • Diamond III: 0.9%
  • Diamond II: 0.3%
  • Diamond I: 0.2%
  • Master: 0.4%

These numbers show how difficult it remains to reach Apex’s highest tiers, with less than 2% of players achieving Diamond III or higher.

The graph above illustrates the rank spread for Season 26, showing most players concentrated between Gold IV and Platinum III. Masters make up a tiny portion of the population, reflecting the current difficulty of progression under Apex’s refined ranked system.

For comparison, here’s the chart comparing Season 25 (Prodigy) to Season 26 (Showdown) mid-season rank distribution:

The data shows a noticeable decrease in the number of Master players from Season 25 to Season 26, confirming that recent balance and RP changes have successfully tightened progression at the top ranks.

What this means for players

This matchmaking update ensures that top-ranked players face more consistent competition while reducing unbalanced lobbies. For the majority of the community, matchmaking remains unchanged, but Masters and Predators will now need to rely more heavily on strategy and team coordination against their peers.

Respawn will continue testing and monitoring ranked data into Season 27 before deciding on further changes for future competitive splits.
