Respawn has officially announced a major overhaul to audio in Apex Legends, set to arrive with Season 27. Sound is one of the most important parts of the Apex experience, giving players information about their surroundings and helping them react quickly in fast-paced combat. With the game becoming busier than ever, Respawn is introducing new technology and mix options to make audio clearer, more responsive, and more accurate.
New focused audio mix

A new feature called the Focused Mix will debut in Season 27, designed to make key sounds stand out more in chaotic moments. This mix prioritizes vital gameplay cues like enemy movement while reducing nonessential noise.
Key features of the Focused Mix:
- Lower weapon and ability volume for your own character.
- Removed squadmate footsteps to prevent confusion. (FINALLY!!!)
- Louder enemy footsteps for better directional awareness.
The Focused Mix will be the default audio setting when Season 27 launches but can be toggled on or off at any time under Audio Options in the settings menu.
Dynamic threat system
Another major addition is the Dynamic Threat System, which automatically adjusts audio based on your situation in real time. It factors in things like enemy proximity, line of sight, and bullet trajectory to calculate a “threat level” for each player.
When multiple sounds overlap, this system will prioritize the most important noises, like nearby gunfire or footsteps, while lowering less relevant sounds. This helps prevent the overwhelming chaos that can occur in Apex’s large-scale fights.
Multiband sidechain compression
Respawn is also introducing multiband side chain compression, a new mixing technique used in professional audio production. This feature isolates important frequencies in sounds like enemy footsteps and automatically reduces similar frequencies from louder noises such as explosions or grenades.
In practice, this means that even in the middle of a firefight, you’ll still be able to clearly hear approaching enemies despite gunfire, ability spam, or grenades going off nearby.
Difference between multiband compression and normal compression
Multiband compression is a technique where multiple compressors are used to compress different frequency bands of a signal individually. A normal compressor applies the compression to the signal evenly along the whole frequency range of that signal.
Smoother indoor and outdoor transitions
Currently, Apex’s sound effects shift abruptly when players move between indoor and outdoor areas. The new audio update will introduce gradual sound blending, allowing for a smoother transition between environments. This creates a more natural and immersive experience when moving around maps with mixed terrain like Olympus and Storm Point.
When will the Apex Legends audio overhaul go live
All of these improvements will go live with Season 27 when it launches on November 4, 2025. Respawn also confirmed that further refinements to audio are planned throughout the season, with player feedback playing a big role in tuning the system.
“Your continued feedback is critical to us as we develop ways to improve audio in Apex,” Respawn stated.
The team is encouraging players to test the new Focused Mix and share feedback once the update is live.
