Valve released a new update for Counter-Strike 2 last night. While the official patch notes focus on adjustments to the silent reload mechanic and minor bug fixes, backend changes discovered by dataminers reveal new casual mode modifiers and files for an unreleased rifle.
Adjustments to the silent reload mechanic
The main gameplay modification in the official changelog addresses how players execute silent reloads. Valve added a setting that allows users to switch the silent reload input between hold and toggle. With the toggle option enabled, players can release the reload key once the silent reload animation begins. If a player needs to abort the quiet reload and transition back to a standard fast reload, tapping the reload key a second time will cancel the action.
Alongside the input adjustment, the update resolves an audio defect. Previously, the initial sound cue of a weapon reload would occasionally play for nearby players regardless of whether a silent reload was initiated. This inconsistency has now been patched.
In the miscellaneous section of the patch notes, Valve fixed a rendering issue on AMD graphics cards where liquid surfaces appeared completely black. The developers also corrected multiple user interface and audio bugs triggered when rewinding footage during demo playback.
Dataminers uncover LAR weapon files
Beyond the official documentation, inspections of the game files by community dataminers Thour and Gabe Follower exposed new weapon assets. According to Thour, files and an inventory icon for a weapon designated as the LAR were added to the client with this patch.
Gabe Follower noted that this weapon is a renamed version of the previously leaked M14. The current files indicate that the LAR functions like a Winchester rifle, utilizing a per-bullet reloading mechanic. However, the materials for the weapon are currently stored inside a folder labeled “do_not_ship”, indicating that the firearm is still in development and not ready for public release.
Mutators arrive in casual modes
The update also quietly introduces a system called mutators to Counter-Strike 2. Mutators act as server configurations that alter standard gameplay rules to provide variety within existing game modes.
The first active mutator is currently live in casual matches, where player models feature enlarged heads. As players get more kills, their head size increases, while deaths cause the head model to shrink. According to Thour, the framework is built to support multiple mutators in the future.
To coincide with the in-game addition, Valve updated the official Counter-Strike account on X.com. The profile picture now displays a character model with an oversized head, while the account banner features a model with a miniature head.
