On September 22, 2026, Valve released the Rush Hour update for Counter-Strike 2. While the developer highlighted a new 3v3 mode and gameplay adjustments, the patch also introduced a hidden pet system built around the iconic game chickens. The feature was entirely omitted from the official release notes, leaving players to discover the mechanics independently through the game menu.
Claiming a chicken egg through weekly drops
The pet system is integrated directly into the weekly Prime drop mechanic. When players complete enough matches to earn their first weekly XP rank increase, they now have a chance to receive a Chicken Egg as a reward option.
Acquiring the egg comes at a direct cost to standard inventory progression. Selecting the egg requires the player to use two drop slots, forcing them to forfeit the weapon cases or cosmetic skins they would normally choose. Once claimed, the egg is stored in the main menu profile and features a custom inspect animation.
Hatching timers and feeding mechanics
The egg operates on a strict timeline within the player inventory. It remains in the profile for exactly one week before it hatches into a chick.
Progressing the pet past this initial stage requires continuous investment. To grow the newly hatched chick into an adult chicken, players must acquire feed through future weekly drops. This mechanic means that players actively raising a pet will need to sacrifice traditional weekly cosmetic rewards to prioritize acquiring feed.
Cosmetic breeds, rarities and the photo book
The adult stage of the system introduces extensive visual customization. There are between 35 and 41 different skin variants distributed across real poultry breeds, including the Catalana and Silkie. You can see the three different types of chickens below.
The game categorizes these variations using distinct rarity tiers similar to standard weapon finishes. High-tier chickens function as the equivalent of a rare gold item from a traditional weapons case. Fully grown chickens feature custom inspectable animations in the main menu. The update also includes a photo book feature that allows players to capture and save images of their fully grown pets. It currently remains unconfirmed if the adult chicken skins will eventually be tradable on the Steam Community Market.
