9z’s run at the IEM Cologne Major 2026 ended in the quarter-finals following a defeat against FURIA. Despite taking an early lead by securing Dust2, the South American squad dropped the subsequent maps, Mirage and Overpass, resulting in their elimination from the tournament. Following the match, Ignacio “meyern” Meyer shared his thoughts on the series and the team’s overall performance.
Missed opportunities on Mirage
Dust2 showcased a strong start for 9z, with meyern securing crucial eliminations through the middle doors. The player noted that the team was playing with confidence and executing their strategies well during the opening map. The momentum shifted on Mirage. Meyern pointed to specific missed opportunities on their Counter-Terrorist side as a turning point in the series.
It was a really difficult game for us,” meyern stated. “I think we had the chance on Mirage and it was really close rounds, especially on CT side. We didn’t manage to win that round and they played really well and they deserve it.
Communication breakdowns on Overpass
The deciding map, Overpass, proved challenging for 9z against an aggressive FURIA defense. Meyern identified internal errors as the primary cause for their struggles on the final map.
They played aggressive on CT side and we had some mistakes on the communication,” meyern explained. “Everyone wanted to do some stuff and we couldn’t have a conclusion on the round. It was really tough and I think it happens because of the experience we have.
Fulfilling a dream on the big stage
Reaching the playoffs at the IEM Cologne Major represents a significant milestone for 9z. Meyern emphasized the value of the experience gained during the tournament and remains optimistic about the team’s future.
I think our run was really good and we need to be happy about it,” meyern said. “It was really helpful for us to play this tournament and get to playoffs, and I know we will come back stronger.
Taking to the arena stage in front of a full crowd was also a personal highlight for the Argentine player. He described the experience of playing on the big stage as amazing, calling it a dream accomplished.
