MAJ3R on reaching the IEM Cologne Major playoffs at 35: I think I am like a red wine

Engin “MAJ3R” Küpeli and Aurora have secured their spot in the IEM Cologne Major 2026 playoffs after a 3-1 run in Stage 3. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the all-Turkish roster, who faced challenges advancing deep into tournaments earlier this year. Positioned on the favorable side of the bracket, Aurora avoids heavyweights like Team Spirit, Team Falcons, and the defending champions Team Vitality. Their immediate focus turns to Team BetBoom in tomorrow’s quarter-final match.

Speaking directly during the press day in Cologne, the 35-year-old in-game leader addressed his longevity in a competitive environment typically dominated by younger players. Küpeli expressed a deep appreciation for the moment, noting that the pressure of competition still fuels his motivation. He compared his current form to his earlier years, stating that his experience has only improved his capabilities.

“I think I am like a red wine,” Küpeli said. “I am French, so I am like a red wine. I am better with age. I try to enjoy every moment, and I really enjoy it. I still have this fire inside of me like 20 years ago. I still have this stress before going to the match, and this is what makes me play Counter-Strike.”

Facing the BetBoom dark horse

Looking ahead to the upcoming playoff match, Küpeli acknowledged the unique threat posed by Team BetBoom. The opponent enters the series with two stand-ins and has been competing since Stage 1 of the Major. According to the Aurora captain, this lack of expectations makes BetBoom a formidable opponent.

“They have nothing to lose,” Küpeli explained. “They just take fun playing together, and they are not scared of losing because there is no objective at all with two stand-ins. If they lose, it is normal. If they win, it is just a bonus. That is why they are dangerous and are a dark horse of this tournament.”

Despite the threat, Küpeli remains confident in his team’s preparation and the strategic direction they have taken regarding their communication and mental approach to the game. With potential semi-final opponents FURIA or 9z waiting, Aurora has a clear path forward if they can maintain their current form on the server.

Unfazed by rumors

Recent discussions in the Counter-Strike community have suggested that Aurora might consider shifting to an international roster. When asked about these rumors during the press day before the playoffs, Engin “MAJ3R” Küpeli maintained a strict focus on his immediate responsibilities and his current contract.

“I am not focusing on that,” Küpeli stated. “I am under contract with Aurora, so I try my best on the present. I do not have time to think about the past, and I do not have time to think about the future. If I do that, I will not be successful in my present. I am just focusing on my present, and nowadays Counter-Strike has become more professional.”
