magic, G2, and Aurora book last tickets to playoffs in Astana

The grueling Swiss group stage of the $1,600,000 PGL Astana 2026 Counter-Strike tournament officially wrapped up today. The 2-2 pool featured three do-or-die matchups, with the winners punching their tickets to the playoffs at the Barys Arena starting this Friday, and the losers packing their bags.

Here is a quick run-through of the three pivotal matches played today:

magic vs. Gentle Mates

The Russophone squad magic completed a miraculous reverse sweep of the group stage, defeating Gentle Mates 2-0. The series was capped off by a thrilling overtime battle on Mirage that went magic’s way. Entering the tournament as one of the lowest-ranked teams and starting the Swiss stage down 0-2, magic rallied back to win three straight series against higher-ranked opponents, securing their first big arena appearance.

G2 Esports vs. Monte

G2 Esports handled their business and avoided an early exit, securing a commanding 2-0 victory over Monte. G2’s individual firepower proved too much for Monte to handle, allowing the star-studded roster to cleanly advance to the top eight and keep their tournament hopes alive.

The MongolZ vs. Aurora

The final series of the day featured a high-stakes clash between The MongolZ and Aurora. Despite a long history of competitive head-to-head matchups, Aurora delivered a decisive 2-0 sweep. Overcoming their map pool disadvantages, Aurora eliminated The MongolZ and claimed the eighth and final playoff spot to close out the group stage.

Teams Advancing to the Playoffs

With the Swiss group stage concluded, the eight teams heading to the single-elimination playoffs this Friday, May 15th, are locked in. Seeding was dictated by their group stage performance:

  • Team Spirit (3-0)
  • 9z Team (3-0)
  • FURIA (3-1)
  • MOUZ (3-1)
  • Team Falcons (3-1)
  • G2 Esports (3-2)
  • magic (3-2)
  • Aurora (3-2)

The playoffs will feature best-of-three quarterfinals and semifinals, culminating in a grueling best-of-five Grand Final this Sunday for the lion’s share of the prize pool.
