huNter on beating Spirit, leadership, and a fresh G2

G2 qualified for the BLAST Open London playoffs with wins over FlyQuest, Liquid and Spirit, capped by a 13–1 Ancient. Nemanja “huNter-” Kovač says the result did not surprise him, and credits coach sAw for shaping a system that fits the roster.

You can watch the full interview in the video below.

Statement win over Spirit

G2 approached Spirit by focusing on their own game, not the opponent’s aura. But beating Spirit 13-1 on any map is a feat not many teams can boast with.

“We were not surprised. We know that we are capable of it and everybody’s beatable. You can beat any team if you are having a right mindset and not not giving them too much respect.”

He adds that Spirit have been excellent this season, and G2 are still ironing out the ups and downs of a new lineup, but the goal is simple, keep playing their game and keep fixing details as they go.

“We are trying to play our game… it’s a lot of ups and downs, but we are trying to fix everything as best as we can.”

New IGL and sAw’s approach

After years as a star and support in different moments, huNter accepted the captaincy as G2 rebuilt with fresh pieces in SunPayus, MATYS and new coach sAw.

“I’ve been asked many times in my career to be an IGL and I didn’t want to accept it… I’m 29 years old and we are building a new lineup, new system, why not, let’s try it.”

He is honest about the tradeoffs and the help he is getting day to day, describing a coach who adapts to the roster rather than forcing a template.

“He’s not trying to force ideas that he had in Heroic. He’s trying to make every player the most comfortable he can.”
