As GamerLegion prepares to face Virtus.pro this morning in a high-stakes 2-1 match at PGL Bucharest, coach Ashley “ashhh” Battye has sent a strong message about what is motivating his team to stay in tier one. It is not just about competition, it’s about survival in a scene that he believes is being overtaken by cheating at the lower levels.
“Every tier one event is super important,” ashhh told James Banks at the PGL Bucharest tournament. “The second you’re falling back into tier two, that’s just infested with cheating right now. It feels really infuriating.”
GamerLegion is one win away from reaching the playoffs. They have taken down Falcons and Legacy, with their only loss so far coming against G2. But for ashhh, it’s not just about making a deep run. It’s about keeping his team above a tier that he says is slipping further away from competitive integrity.
Cheating fears drive GamerLegion’s hunger
The team underwent key changes at the start of 2025, adding Swedish star Fredrik “REZ” Sterner from NIP and Czech talent Oldřich “PR” Nový. While their strong performances have helped GamerLegion look more stable, ashhh pointed to an even stronger reason behind the squad’s motivation.
“We need to work really hard to stay at this level and we can’t let it go,” he said.
“It just doesn’t feel right”
ashhh is far from alone in raising concerns about the state of tier-two Counter-Strike, but few have said it as directly. His comments reflect a growing frustration with what many in the scene have hinted at but often avoid saying publicly.
“When I’m watching some games, it just doesn’t feel right,” he added. “Even as a viewer, it’s infuriating.”
